Sony DVD player problem (sound not in synch with video)

I figured this goes in Hardware and not Glitch Exhaust, since it's a problem with the player not the DVDs... if I'm wrong feel free to move as you please.
This is my first post in this forum, and sorry if this is a common topic I've been missing out on.

I don't know my player model off hand (I'm at work right now) but it's a standard 1-disc SONY player that was fairly new to the market in Dec. 2000 when I bought it.

I've had the player for almost 4 years now, and it's shown a glitch that only occured on rare occassions (like once every 3 months) when I first owned it, but is now occuring more often (maybe once every 2 weeks or once every 6 or 7 movies).

The problem is that in the middle of a movie/ TV show on DVD and at a seemingly random time (start, middle, or late section of the film) the sound will become out of synch with the action on the screen. It's most noticable when seeing that the words being spoken by a character are being heard a half second after the actor's mouth has "said" the word.

To fix the problem I press stop on the remote and immidiately afterwards press play and usually it re-synchronizes itself. A couple times I've had to stop and play a few times to get it back on track. It's never fixed itself if I let it "play through" (if anything it'll get worse), but having to fix the glitch is indeed a minor annoyance.
Again, it does not appear to be a problem with the DVDs, as I keep them in mint condition and it's seemingly random when the problem occurs (no pattern with DVDs from certain studios etc).

Is my player just getting old? Should I give its insides a cleaning of some sort (I've never done much outside of dusting)?
Thanks for any help. It's not a major problem where I feel I need to get a new player or anything...just a little bit of a hassle.

It sounds like the player might need service. Maybe it's an issue with the "laser pickup". My younger brother has a PlayStation and found he had more "reliable" game playback if he turned the player on its side since that enabled the laser to "read" the disc better. At least, that's his theory.

I would take the player in for service. Get an estimate for repair and then decide what to do based on the estimate.

Maybe you need a new DVD player... (j/k)

Peace...

Thanks for the feedback, tom.

I'll continue to see if the problem persists and/or worsens. And if it does I'll get an estimate. Much appreciated.
