A weird question, may be hardware.. may be software

I recently shot a lot of footage at a wedding I attended on a digital camera. I moved the files to my PC, cleaned everything up, edited out the unnecessary stuff and ended up burning everything onto a DVDR because most of the people involved have DVD players.

Of course there has to be someone who still only has a VCR and I'm wondering if I can take the DVD player and run it directly into the VCR and just record the disc contents. I purposefully left the DVD region free but I don't know if it's just Macrovision that prevents recording DVD content (the software) or if there is something in the hardware that also has copy protection in it.

I guess I can find out later tonight, but I figured I ask before I waste my time with this.

Anyone know?

I'm not sure Macrovision copy protection is involved when you burn your own DVDs. I would imagine you would be able to record a DVD you burn to a VHS tape without problems.

I wonder how this would work for commercial DVDs that were "backed up".

Interesting question...

Peace...

Thanks Tom. I'm tempted to just tell her to buy a DVD player, but it's the groom's mother so I can't be all high and mighty with her. If it's a simple thing, then I won't complain. If it's going to be a pain in the ass, I'm going to tell her to watch it at her son's house.

This whole project has become a pain in the butt, but I'm hoping that I can just hit play on the DVD player and record on the VCR and record the DVD. Logically I don't see why this wouldn't work, but I never had a reason to do it before.

I'll let you know.

edit: Tom, wouldn't backed up DVDs still have protection on them?

Dude... here is your chance to do the right thing! Pick up a < $100 entry level DVD player and give it to her along with the DVD. Be sure to pick up a RF modulator if they have an old TV without composite or S-Video video inputs.

Do your part to support DVD...

Peace...

She ain't MY mother in law and I'm not shagging her daughter!

No $100 gift for grandma from me!

I will make the recommendation to her when I see her though that it may be time to invest in one on the cheap.

Not even in the name of contributing to the proliferation of DVD technology?

It doesn't have to be a $100 player. You can usually find an APEX for $50 (or less) now. And that would be a perfect starter kit.

Not my mother in law, Jerm. She'll get nothing from me but my time. She's not even paying for the video cassette!

I got stuck with this because I had the digital camera, the god box PC and a DVD burner.

I agree with Tom: unless YOU encoded the DVD with Macrovision (not likely ) it will copy just fine to your VCR.

Chalk up another agreement. I doubt you encoded it in Macrovison and if you did, unless it's included with the burning software, you probably owe them a licensing fee. So you probably didn't.
