running video through a sony receiver
Ok, I have a svideo cable running to the projector from the receiver, and I have my Playstation2 running into the receiver also via svideo, that works fine. My problem is when I tryed to hook up a vcr today, via the composit inputs on the receiver, I get sound, but no video, is it possible run composit video into the receiver and svideo out?
I have a Sony Stdr675. If not can someone recomend a vcr with svideo out, that isnt expensive?

I think you've got another option; Does your pj accept composite in connections, and if so, can it switch between the two (svid/composite)? I think it may be cheaper to run another set of cables to the pj (assuming they aren't too long) versus upgrading your vcr. However, upgrading your vcr to svid will be a significant improvement in video, so if it were me, I'd go that route. Mitsu & JVC have cheap units that also do svideo tapes, which are an even bigger improvement in video quality....check the brick and mortar joints like BB, CC, 6thAve, etc...I think they can be had for like 50-80 bucks.

Thats the thing, Id need to run the composite 30', which would cost me around $30, plus it means another cable. I still have old movies on VHS that I cant get on DVD so I am willing to spend a little to get decent vcr, plus, I wont be investing in a TIVO or DVD-R any time soon so better quality for recorded programs would be nice. I just dont want to spend a lot of money on some professional video machine. I looked at BB (although only briefly) and I didnt see any VCRs that had svideo out.

Hi all,
long time lerker, first time poster. The easiest way to get video out of the receiver from the vcr is to get a composite to s-video adapter from radio shack. This is what I have in my setup and works great. you don't get any increased picture benefit from s-video, but you do get the ability to switch your vcr video signal through the receiver. |

Edited; And if you want the best looking tapes you can get, use the more expensive SVHS tapes (which will only work with a S-VHS deck). Around 4-5 bucks a pop, but video quality jumps from 240 lines of resolution, to 400. |

wow I stopped by radio shack to grab a composite to svideo converter, and the thing was 20 bucks! Add on 10 for an svideo cable (because this was female, and the shortest svideo cable they have is 6 feet) and thats a little out there to make a POS vcr work.
