RCA 5220P Question

I have an RCA5220P DVD player which has been working very well for me for the past 4 years. There have been two incidents when I was watching two of my movies (which is listed below) where one scene, all of a sudden, the player freezes and automatically shuts off. When I go back to turn it on and go back to the scene where the shutoff occurred, it played with no problem. I wanted to know why this particular player does this, it is sometimes annoying, because all of my DVDs play very well, and they are in superb condition. If anyone knows about this, please let me know.

Disc Titles
-----------
Goldfinger: Special Edition - (MGM)
The Horror of Dracula - (WB)

If it doesn't happen consistently, it's most likely a "hiccup" during DVD playback. You can read more about problems people have in the "Glitch Exhaust" forum here.

The best thing you can do is make sure the discs you play are dust/lint/scratch free. If the DVD repeatedly paused at the same place EVERY time you played it, it might be a compatibility problem with that disc and your player. If you tend to have problems with several "random" discs, see about getting the player repaired or replaced. DVD Players are inexpensive enough that replacing a player is an option that should be considered, based on your frustration level with your current player.

I don't know why your player shuts off. If it happens consistently, I would be more concerned. If it's an occasional problem, I would investigate swapping out the player at my convenience if not immediately. You can get good DVD players for under $100 these days.

Are these two DVDs the only DVDs you have problems with? About how many DVDs have you played in the 4 years you've owned the player?

Peace...

Since this isn't a regularly occuring problem at the same timecode on the same discs, chances are likely that you could be having problems with the player rather than the discs causing the problem. I had a RCA 5210P, the previous year's model, as my first player, and it was pretty good and sturdy, but did glitch up on problem discs. But my problems were mostly the result of glitchy and rotted discs, not the player.

Having read some reviews on Amazon's site of this player, it seems to be hit-and-miss as to whether you get a good reliable player or a problematic player that dies within 6 months.

Here's the link to Amazon of this particular player.

I would recommend to start looking around for a new player to replace it. I ended up buying a Panasonic RV-32K, using it exclusively for the past year-and-a-half, with zero problems, and gave my RCA 5210P to my brother, who reported no playing problems with it since.
