Surround Sound from Regular TV

I have a very nice surround sound system, 600 watts...
I never get a surround sound...sound from regular TV. Sometimes it says on the screen that it's Presented in Dolby Surround but it never seems to work!(I usually use "Sim Surround) Do I possibly have something hooked up wrong? I get wonderful sound from DVD!

Um, it's hard to provide help without knowing any specific info about your gear. Please post the make/model, at the very least, of your TV and A/V receiver. Also please describe how you have everything connected.

Peace...

How I had mine set up (before I stopped giving a damn about TV) was like this:

Audio menu on TV set to Main Stereo
Audio L/R out on TV to Audio L/R in on receiver
Receiver set to some flavor of Dolby Surround.

Keep in mind some channels suck at stereo. For example, my A&E only has Left channel. Blarg.

Most TV is in mono so it only comes out of the center speaker. Some TV is in stereo. It is also really low bit rate. That is why it sounds lousy. If you are used to DVD sound, TV will never sound good.

brttlt, first off, I'm guessing that you either have digital cable or sattellite TV...if you don't have either one of these then you're never going to get true "surround sound", the best you can get would be Dolby Pro Logic or Pro Logic II depending on your reciever...

In order to get true Dolby Digital from on air broadcasts (assuming the broadcast is offered in DD format) is to connect the Digital Audio out from either your digital cable box or your sattellite reciever to your audio receiver either with a digital coaxial cable or a fiber optic toslink cable...connecting your TV to your audio reciever with standard RCA patch cables will only send the analog signal which true Dolby Digtal cannot be derived from...hope this helped...
