You really need a sound meter. You can get one from radio shack pretty cheaply, and then just use the test tones on your receiver to make sure all the channels read the same. The calabration discs (at least VE and Avia) have a better set of tones, and some other tests that are slightly helpful, but I dont know how terribly important they are.

This Radio Shack Sound Pressure Level (SPL) meter is similar to the ones people tend to use:

You can do a search on "SPL Meter" to find previous discussion on using these to perform audio calibrations. Peace...
