Progressive DVD Question

Is it true that I need special "component" cords/plugs that are about $100 that have 3 video and 2 sound to use on an HDTV monitor?

Nope.. no need to spend $100 on component video cables. Also, component video cables only have 3 connectors which all carry video data. Audio is NOT transmitted via component video cables.

Peace...

The cables that come with your DVD player are usually composite. They are the RCA-type (yellow, red, white) cables.

You're going to need component cables which are usually NOT included -- well, my Samsung progressive scan player didn't come with any.

...and you need a compatible TV with component inputs.

The red white and yellow cables are the same as the red green and blue cables, and can be used interchangbly. I used plain radioshack AV cables for both my component video and audio needs. You will often find that the red green and blue cables cost more simply because they are called component cables, radio shack does this.

so what I'm understanding is I don't need to go out and spend $85 on component cables?? The guy at Soundtrack said i had to have them for the progressive scan dvd to work correctly!

That is correct.

What you do is this. Take the composite (yellow connector) video cable and the stereo audio cables (red and white connectors) and connect them to the DVD player and TV using the component video connections. Then you will need either a digital coax or toslink (optical) audio cable for sound, unless you get one pair of stereo audio cables (red and white connectors) for the sound. See how the picture looks. If it looks good (no distortion or anything like that), then take the cables you're using as video cables and show them to the guy at "Soundtrack" and tell him those worked just fine for your component video connection.

Ok, maybe you shouldn't show the cables to the guy at Soundtrack but at least give it a try and see what happens. Sales people will try to sell you stuff so they can get your money. If you're still not sure, search in this forum for "component cable" and see what previous discussion you can find.

Good luck!

Peace...

If you're talking red, white, and yellow spagetti wire (each wire is the same diameter) then you'd be correct. However, on some cable sets the yellow wire is a tad thicker. On these, they add some additional foil sheilding on top of the braiding that is used on the thinner wires. For video, the additional sheilding can make a big difference, depending on how 'noisy' your area is (RF interference).

But, take any 3 cables and they will work (its not like you'll get no picture at all).

Or worse case, you might see Chromy's face on the screen distracting you from whatever movie you might be watching at the time...

Peace...

I am not trying to be mean, but look in your DVD player manual. It will tell you what you need for progressive scan playback. Once you get Component cables, you will need to see how to activae the progressive scan playback on your player.

Oh, and my DVD player came with component cables, they are the red, blue and green cables and they are for video only. The only way to get video when you are in progressive mode is by the component cables, but high end ones are not necessary, $5-10 ones will do just fine.

Actually, I'm glad you posted this snipsnap. Sometimes I think we post questions on forums prematurely.

I'm not sure if his manual would answer the question regarding how much to invest on component video cables, but it should at least cover what the DVD player requires for component video connections. At least one would hope it does.

Peace...
