Dvhs

Ok, thanks to Snips info on the JVC DVHS deck for $250, I have started looking into the possibility. The idea of HD movies is pretty cool, but that in itself is not enough to get me to invest in the deck, but the fact that it is backward compatiple with all my old VHS (that I am currently unable to watch) and that I can use it to record both SD and HD content, makes it seem like a worth while investment.

I cant see myself plopping down the cash for a TiVO, and then having to pay for the subscription, plus it cant record HD (can it?). And I would still have to get something to watch all my VHS on.

I was just wondering what they do about programing...do they use some sort of interactive guide like the TiVOs? Is VCR+ still around? or do you have to program it like the old vcrs with the time, date, and channel?

Also, does anyone have any idea how many times you can record over on a single tape?

Most important, this particular deck, does not have component video in (I assume this is for copy guard purposes), but it does have a firewire port. The problem is I have the moto 5100 HD cable box, which does not have firewire. It does have USB, though. I know the simple solution is to try and get the 6200 from comcast, but assuming that wont work, are there any converters that will allow me to convert either component video or USB to fire wire?

Any other general opinions of the Deck or technology would be appreciated, although I will not refuse to buy it simply because it is tape based.

Check out Home Theater Spot or AVS. They have a much larger Dvhs fan base than here. They are not as fun to chat with, though.

There are a few people who own D-VHS machines on AVS Forum and they post regularly, so they shouldn't be hard to find. Search for "D-VHS" in their DVD Player forum and you can find some comparative discussion. You can also see discussion of D-VHS movies in the "Digital software" section.

Peace...

Also check out the HDTV recorders section at AVS.
