HELP WITH HDTV!!! How do i get 1080i from a dvd player!?
My tv is capable of getting 1080i, but it doesn't have a DVI interface, only component, and there is no way that I know of to get 1080i from my dvd's w/o this DVI interface...So how am I suppose to get this from dvd's? Wait for HD-DVD? Is there a converter box or something that will give dvd's 1080i? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!
Thanks! panhead4life |

Wow, nothing to panick about. You can order the Momitsu 880 DVD player. It upconverts 480i DVD images to 1080i or 720p through the component outputs. That is the only way to get 1080i without DVI. It is against the DVD forum to send out a 1080i image through component. Understand that it is not going to make that much of a difference, if at all on a CRT set. What is so impressive about these players is how they retain the image in digital form all the way through to the displyed image. Since CRT sets are analog, there has to be a conversion to analog somewhere. Supposedly there is not that much of a big image change with the 1080i DVD players on a CRT screen. I can not vouch for that, though, becuase I have not tried it myself on my CRT screen.

thanks for the reply...are there any other options? I'd wanna stick w/ something made here in the US. Someone at Best Buy told me I can get a HDTV Box Top Set or whatever, and run that through my dvd player for 720/1080i picture...is this true?
Thanks, panhead4life |

The device you are looking for is called a video scaler..There are many of them..all types and uses.. and all price ranges. Go here for all you ever need to know:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forum...?s=&forumid=37 ...and don't expect to see a miraculous improvement just because you are taking a 480i/480p source and upconverting it to 1080i.. after all it's still a 480i/p source. --mike |

If you are looking for a DVD player that is "made in the USA" your options are pretty slim... If you mean, you are looking for a DVD player easily found in a US retail store that performs 180i/720p scaling, your only option might be a Samsung 931.. but that one only does it via DVI port too..
So really your best option is to either wait or using your current DVD player get an external scaler like the AVT-3700 and get 1080i /720p that way... and unless you go to a high end specialty store, you'd be hard pressed to find an external scaler... --mike |

The 5900 is the only Denon that does DVI scaling to 1080i.

Yeah try out D-VHs. You can get a player for around $250 now at www.clubmac.com. Search JVC VHS

D-VHS.....it's a love-hate relationship. I have seen D-VHS and have been quite impressed with some of the titles. However, I, personally, cannot get past the fact that it is still tape.....and tape can get eaten, ripped, torn, stretched, etc...........
If I were you, I would do a couple of things, depending on what you want to spend..... 1) on the lower end of the cost scale, increase your HDTV capabilities and get the HD package on DirecTV (with HD-DirecTiVOs coming out soon) or an off-the-air antenna to get your HD locals. This will satisfy your HD urges for a while. 2) On probably even more of a lower end of the scale, get a DVD recorder. Yeah, doesn't solve your initial problem, but you will have fun with it. 3) On the higher end of the scale, some of the outboard scalers out there are quite good. Of course, you may have to pay some bigger dollars but they do a great job and blow away most scalers/doublers built into display devices. One that comes to mind is the Faroudja Native Rate scaler. With this unit, you call the factory and give them the native resolution of your display device. They then fit your unit with a board so that it upconverts to exactly the resolution of your device. These are really nice. You can always pay (I think it might be about $500) to have a res. change done if you change display devices. I have done a lot of business with Ensemble Home Theater A/V in New Hampshire. Give them a call if you want, they are very helpful in this regards! Their website is: http://www.ensembleav.com/ |

But you will still need DVI for an HTPC.
Also, even when HD-DVD comes out, it will likely only putput 1080i and 720p via the DVI or HDMI output, not component. The goal of the MPAA and DVDForum is to get rid of analog connections entirely for HD content so that it can never reach the internet. So expect to get a new DVI-HDCP enabled TV when you truly want HD movies. D-VHS will likely be the only pre-recorded format to send HD images through component video. Start Saving!

I don't have DVI in on my projector, and it displays my HTPC at 720P quite nicely, thankyouverymuch Depending on your display device, you can use a n RGBHV breakout cable for your High Resolution input. Chromy had his HTPC hooked up to the Mitsubishi RPTV that way.j
