Welcome to DVD File.

This belongs in the "Hardware" forum, so I'll move it there.

Peace...

Well hello there! Are you talking about a home theater in a box? Or are you talking about a new receiver, speakers, sub, dvd player, etc..? It would help if you specified.....

IMO, does it matter? He's looking to spend $1500. Is there a HTIB worth recommending? If I had the knowledge (which I sadly don't, my HT is pretty simple) I would recommend piecing a system together.

Well Jerm, I believe it does matter . What if he's looking to simply spend $1500 on a receiver, and everybody chimes in with speaker suggestions? Maybe it's me, but when he says home theater "system", I don't know what he means....speakers, a/v receiver, seperates, or everything (htib). And yes, I too would recommend piecing a system together, but what "pieces" are needed? Know what I mean Jerm?

PS. I was waiting for someone to start the 2004 poll....good job!

You may want to check out some of the internet only dealers. They make incredible products at great prices with incredible customer service.

For speakers:

www.axiomaudio.com
www.rocketloudspeakers.com

For Subwoofers:

www.svsubwoofers.com
www.hsuresearch.com

For Recievers:
Denon
Yamaha
Pioneer Elite
Onkyo
Harmon Kardon

Understand that speakers are the most important aspect of the sound system. It will be more important for you to spend more money on better speakers than on a more powerful reciever or fancier cables. Just about any reciever from those companies listed above produce incredible sound as well as having all of the latest features.

Good luck and have an open mind. Remember to be patient, if you jump the gun and buy something without testing it, you will most likely have regret for your purchase.

Some other great speaker brands are:
Paradigm
B&W
Energy
Monitor Audio
Velodyne

If you could? That's the question you need to decide on. Do you have any speakers now? If so, can you delegate them to the surround duties, and what about a center channel? Do you have a speaker to use for that while you save up for everything but the receiver and front mains? I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but with just a receiver and two good mains, you aint getting 5.1 surround.

From your wording, I take it you are going into this as an upgrade (?) since you mention dts-es which is relatively new (well, new to people like me who don't upgrade everytime a new format comes out). If so, go for a pair of good front speakers that sound good to you. Yes, you need to narrow the field based on the plethora of opinions out there, and go listen. Don't take anyones word on speakers my friend....think of them like pizza; Everybody has their personal favorite, some like sausage (meat - low end), some like it plain (neutral sounding), and some like it with peppers (hot - detailed)...Geez, did I just make an analogy of speakers and pizza!?!?! Well, I hope you get my point.

The other question is, do you spend the bulk of your $1500 on a receiver or 2 mains? I agree wholeheartadely with Snip - spend it on the speakers. There are plenty of receivers out there that are 'cheap' and still provide the muscle and features at a reasonable price. Speakers on the other hand are like pizza......which topping are you gonna want? Sorry, guess I'm hungry and it's taking way to long to type all this, so I'll leave you with the questions I asked above and come back after my belly is full of all those extra toppings!

I obviously didn't answer your question, but's only because "other" questions need to be answered first - by you (IMHO). Get ready! This is going to be fun!

OK, that was one of the funniest posts I have ever read. Awesome.

Pizza and Speakers, totally related.

If I still worked in comission sales, I would start using this analogy for sure.

Although I do kinda agree, some people prefer Domino's to gourmet Pizza from a local pizza place. Even though they cost around the same, some people just like Domino's, even though I think Domino's tastes like shite.

Kind of a similar analogy to Bose vs. any high quality brand of speakers for the same price or less. People buy Bose even though there is so much better out there for the money. But since Bose has the best marketing, they get unwarranted sales.

With a $1500 ( US? ) Budget, This is what I would do.

Receiver: Denon AVR 1804 6.1 For 364.99 + shipping at Etronics
Mains: Boston Acoustics CR85 Bookshelf Speakers 399.95 PR
Surrounds: Boston Acoustics CR 65 Bookshelf speakers, 2 Pair at 199.95 PR.
Center: Boston Acoustics CRC Center Channel speaker 199.95
Subwoofer...well, the Subwoofer I chose blew the budget buy about 460, but Here it is. SVS 20-39PCi at 599.

This would be a ROCKIN system by any means

Cool... will you be mainly watching TV or movies or will there be a mixture of listening to music as well as watching TV and movies?

Peace...
