DVD Player & 5.1 Speakers

Apologies but I am a newbie at all this hi-tech audio stuff. I recently bought a DVD player with 5.1 decoding and a set of Logitech Z-640 speakers. The speakers have 3 mini-jack connections for a sound card while the DVD player has RCA phono female connections for the six 5.1 channels.

Is there a way to connect the player and speakers and get good performance? At the moment, I'm using the 2 stereo channels on the player connected to the speakers via an adaptor supplied with the speakers (designed for games consoles).

Thanks - Dave, UK

I found this on www.bytesector.com:

The setup of the system is very weird and not well planned. The subwoofer is connected to all the four-satellite speakers, but for some reason the subwoofer receives its signal from the center channel, which is in turn connected, to the soundcard. Such a layout greatly increases the wire traffic on the desktop. Therefore the center channel has two very thick cables running into its backside. One is a three input signal cable, which connects to the standard front L/R, the rear L/R and the center/subwoofer output found on most 5.1 capable sound cards. If your sound card only supports digital 5.1 (where there is only one wire which carries all the sound data) then you are out of luck with the Z-640’s. The center channel sends the rest of the sound data to the subwoofer via a fairly thick cable with a connector similar to a VGA monitor cable.
Sound like you should connect the cables coming out of the center channel speaker to your player. The L/R front to the L/R front out, the L/R surround to the L/R surround out and the center and subwoofer to the appropriate output plugs on the player.

all you need is three Stereo Mini to RCA converters. These can be had at any electronics store.

Did it come with these adaptors/convertors or not?
