Problem with a Yamaha HTR-5630RDS

Heya, 1st time poster here, I just got myself a new Yamaha HTR-5630RDS A/V receiver and its all set up with some new speakers but the problem is that it doesnt seem to be playing 5 way surround unless I use a DTS DVD.
The sound is coming out of all 5 speakers and the sub and if I do remove the front speakers I can hear some stuff out the back but I still dont get the impression of it working correctly.
Another thing that is making me think its not right is that the display has lights for each of the speakers, front left, right, rear left right and center and sub ect.
When I using a DTS DVD all of these light up and I can definatly tell that its working. However on a normal DVD that should be Dolby digital 5.1 only the front Left and right lights come up on the display.

I hope this makes sense, if there are any questions which will help you understand please ask because although im resonably competant with computers and electronics, A/V receivers and 5.1 is kinda new to me.

Thanks in advance.

Which DVDs are you using as your test material?

Peace...

Ive tried the superbit XXX, DTS blade 2 and also the same DVD's usuing standard dolby digital 5.1. Ive also gone through Swat, star wars2, loads of them, all of them on standard 5.1 only show up the front left and right channel in the display.

What kind of DVD player are you using? Check the player's menu to make sure the player isn't configured to do some kind of downmix of Dolby Digital 5.1 audio or something.

Peace...

ahha, went into the settings and Dolby Digital was set to D-PCM or something, I changed it to Dolby Digital and now all the speaker lights come on its just after midnight here so i'll have to wait for a proper test but it looks like I owe you a drink.

Thanks a lot.

What acronyms or abbreviations are you having problems with?

Have you checked out the DVD FAQ?

Peace...
