Question about regions?

if a dvd says the encoding is "All Regions"

that can be played in any dvd player right?

for example: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...v=glance&s=dvd

That is correct. However I would confirm from some other sites first to ensure that movie is indeed a Region free disc.

I dont know if "all regions" is the same are region 0. I know region 0 is supposed to be region free, but it still wont play in a lot of players. I bought my father a copy of the Final Countdown which is legitimatly r0, and it wouldnt play in his sony 200 disc mega changer, or in his first generation RCA player, but it played in his laptop just fine.

I think this is for copy guard purposes, I dont think there are many legit r0 titles, so the major manufactures simply disable the ability to play the discs.

Even if it's "region free" doesn't it also have to be in the correct video format (NTSC or PAL)?

Or at least the player would have to be able to convert the video to the correct output format. I know nothing about region free DVD players.

Peace....

It's legit, and all Asian DVDs are released in NTSC, regardless of their TV standard. There are plenty of legitamate region 0 titles, in fact most Hong Kong film is released R0

More than likely with The Final Countdown, your father bought an import from Australia which is region 0. The disc is in PAL so it won't play on your TV, but the laptop doesn't care about video format.

I dont think that in my case the problem is NTSC v. PAL, because the dvd players both read it as no disc. If it were an NTCS v. PAL thing, they discs would play, they just would show up on the TV, right?

Depends on your player. PAL on an NTSC TV is pretty ugly. Blipping, static you name it, so they may have just programmed it to reject outright
