So far, the best bang for the buck I have seen in the $500 price reange is the Yamaha YHT-550. It comes with a DVD player, 6.1 receiver, 6 speakers, and a sub. It's a great starter set. that can be upgraded later on when you decide you want more.

With a $500 budget, you will be looking for a "Home Theater in a Box" (HTiB) setup. It will have the 5 speakers, sub, and Audio/Video receiver at the very minimum and maybe even a DVD player.

Pioneer, Panasonic, Kenwood, Cambridge Soundworks (I think), and others make HTiBs within your budget.

If there is a BestBuy near you, check out the HTiBs. Write down the make/model info for the ones you like and post that info here and we can help you determine if that HTiB would be a good investment for you or not.

Do you have a DVD player already? Would you want something for movie viewing primarily or for some mixture of movie viewing and music listening? Or mainly music?

Peace...
