Anyone have trouble (or know anything) with the CONVERGENCE on their Projection TV?

I have a Panasonic 47x49 and the convergence on this thing is a pain in the ass. Whenever the power goes out of the TV is moved, its thrown off. I ALWAYS find myself fixing it and its really upsetting.

Does anyone know anything about convergence? I always find myself messing with this:

1. A green cross that goes across the entire screen. I have to align the picture either to the right and left or up and down and its hard getting or finding out what the dead center is

2. A smaller cross in the center of the screen that I have to align with the colors blue and red

3. Im ALWAYS in this one lining up 8 crosses (4 corners, between those corners [#2 is the center]) I have to align the reds and the blues

If I dont do this, EVERYTHING in the light either has a noticable red or blue halo. The red I can take care of, but I cant get rid of the damn blue. Its always there, and on a certain part of the screen. Its like I cant line anything up to get rid of it.

Its really frusturating me and my old man and we got this over a year ago from Circuit City. We want to get them over here to service it and get the picture looking sharp. But I dunno...

Anyone know anythin gabout this stuff and can offer some insights, ideas, etc?

This is one of the main reasons I went with DLP technology. I had the PT47WX51 for three years. The first two years were fine and I performed the 64PT convergence on more than one occasion (and after each time I had nightmares of being in 'Tron'). The picture was sharp and stayed that way for months at a time. This past year it had been "drifting" more than usual and I got tired of perfecting it. Plus, there are grids for 480i/p and another for 1080i.

Once I saw the razor sharp text on LCD and DLP TVs, I was hooked.

My suggestion to you, if you plan on keeping it, is to perform the 64PT convergence in the service menu. While you are at it, fix the overscan and geometry. As for the blue, you might try focusing the guns. My blue was horribly out of focus. I focused all three guns manually and it made a significant difference.

Hop on over to this site, http://panny.tv, and start reading.

Ive heard about that 64pt thing. Is it hard to do and can I fuck up my TV?

Also, what are the grids for 480i/p and another for 1080i? Are those in the 64 pt thing, or something ive already mentioned?

Thanks for the link! Im on the way

Yep, I advise against accessing the service menu and stick with the user menu. If you're careful, you can perform the 64-pt convergence yourself but if you screw something up, you can render the set NOT watchable. People have posted their horror stories here and on other sites.

More importantly, we need to find out why the convergence on your set is drifting so much. The set *might* need service. How long have you had it? My gut tells my you've blown way past the 100hr burn-in period and the convergence should stay set at this point in time.

My Toshiba 57HX81 is almost 3 yrs old and I haven't touched my convergence settings (9-pt) in well over a year. I used to check it out every now and then to see how it looked but never needed to touch it after my video calibration after the 100-hr burn-in period.

Is your set still under warranty?

Peace...

Ewww that sounds like something I better not touch than. Especailly after reading all those steps on that Panny site and alot of it sounding greek to me!

Ive had the TV for a year and 2 months. Its still under warranty and thats why my parents want it serviced. IM afraid they woudl make it worse, but im giuessing if they do, theyll give us a new tv.

I would look into getting it serviced. However BEFORE you do ANYTHING, go over to Home Theater SPot and post this problem in the Panasonic manufacturer's forum. Others with your TV might provide some useful info as well as some ISF techs.

Good luck...

Peace...

I've had my Toshiba 57HDX82 for a about a year an a half now and I haven't had too much trouble with the convergence. I've had even less after it was professionally calibrated last July.

Before calibration I did nothing but the 9-point convergence. I was afraid of the service menus to go into the 64. When the guy who did the calibration was doing the 64 point he showed me how to do it and that's what I've done ever since. The 9 point never really made a difference to me, but the 64 point does a lot better job.

My guess is that your TV's convergence has drifted off to much for the 9 point to make a difference. I'd suggest that you vist The Home Theater Spot as well. There are tons of educated people there to help you along. In fact the guy that calibrated my TV is from 'The Spot'.

If you don't want to tweak it yourself, I recommend hiring an ISF trained/certified technician to come calibrate this set.

Get them to:

Focus the guns
Fix geometry
Perform the 64PT convergence
Calibrate grayscale
Disable SVM
Calibrate brightness, contrast, saturation, hue and sharpness

This might set you back $600-$1000 - but it will be worth it.

This site:

http://panny.tv

Is the best tweak/info site for the PT47xxxx TVs period.

TONS of useful info there. From geometry to eyeballing greyscale. It's all there. All known problems with this series are also there.
