Velodyne Subwoofers

Anybody own one? I know I've read that they're pretty good and i found 1, "CHT10", 375watt, 10", forward firing for $400!
Good deal?

I have a CT120 and I think it's great. Granted I haven't really sampled any others, but this one has good kick to it. I like it for both movies and music. I think the price for the CT120 was about $500 when I got it. So $400 sounds about right for the one your looking at.

I like the Velos a lot. There is, however, a distinct difference in their model lines, though...you get what you pay for.

I own the Velo SPL-1200 (front firing 12" with 750watt/1500watt peak amp).

I love it! It goes low, hits hard, and really rocks my world during movies. On top of that, it's pretty damn musical as well.

Now, I don't know where you shopped for this sub, but I am looking at an add from last Sundays paper and I see a Velo CHT12 going for $295. So I would shop around a bit more. If you can get the 12" for less than the 10".....it's a no brainer to me .

By the way, how big is the room you plan on using the sub in?

I checked nextag real quick...seems like Iguana's right someone is trying to rip you off. You can get the cht10 for $199 at etronics.

Heres the nextag hits I got, for some reason the page says onkyo cht10, but if you check the actual links to the retailers its the Velo.

I own a Velodyne VLF810, which is a nicer model than the CHT series, however, I listened to a friends HSU STF-2 ($399 at www.hsuresearch.com) and it blew away my Velodyne! He also had Axioms so it was a pretty fair comparison. I thought I made a good deal for my sub at $299 + $50 in shipping, I was wrong. The HSU was much tighter for music and went deeper for movies than my Velodyne.

Normally, I would say go Velodyne, but HSU is just that good. They also have the STF-3, if you can afford it, it is supposed to be amazing. If it really is that much more superior than the STF-2, then it must be incredible.

Yeah i know more powerful subs are out there but my Velodyne CHT-8 sub still can kick some ass. (Blade II track showe dme how much tomight) But i would suggest avoid the CHT-10 I have read a few reviews from online stores and many reviews say that the CHT-10 model doesn't have the quick pounding sound like the CHT-12 or even my smaller 8. If you decide to go for the Velodyne sub i would again void the CHT-10 and pay the bit extra for the CHT-12

isn't the HSU sub a "bottom firing" sub? It looked as though it might be in the picture. I see the Velodyne is a "front firing" sub...isn't this better?

"Better" ? Technically, I don't believe so.

I will say though, that so many rooms do not provide and a spot whereby the sub completely dissapears. Many will say you cannot hear where the sub is placed given the nature of the low frequencies. To me, that applies only in the best rooms with oodles of time spent on placement. In rooms where optimum placement is not an option, I say you can hear where the sub is (please - no flames guys - it's my personal experience only ).

Personally, I wanted a front firing sealed sub with a big amp. Again, this is merely my opinion, but I wanted it to slam me during movies and I wanted to feel the air push me backwards into the couch. For me, it was a no brainer to put the sub directly between the two front speakers. I am very pleased with the results.

I may not be correct both tecnically and what the masses will tell you, but the results in my room are more than adequate (for me!). So, take my advice with a grain of salt as YMMV.

I had a chance to audition this speaker and a Definitive Technology 8" ProSub80. I felt the Definitive was able to produce a tighter sounding bass in a smaller size. Also I noticed the Velodyne doesn't cover the 80-120Hz range. Therefore I went with the comparable priced Definitive Technology ProSub80 .

My Velodyne is actually a forward firing passive radiator with a downward firing active subwoofer. I have never heard any technical reasons as to why one is better than the other. However, many high end subs are downward firing. Although there are definitely some high end forward firing ones, too.

The HSU is still much better. Do not live blindly on what type is better or worse, go by what sounds best. I have heard both and the HSU is far superior.
