Cable Movies in HDTV

Is this what the mentioned DVD-HD will look like? Some of these movies on HBO or Showtime, when in Hi-Def are just awesome...better than DVD quaility!
However, the bummer is, they don't always show the movie in , let's say, 2.35 or such. It looks as though most of the shows are blown out to 1.85!
Am I correct?

Sadly, that seems to be the case. The next big fight may be against 16x9 pan&scan.

This drives me crazy. StarzHD premiered 'Gangs of New York' in 4:3, however last night I was flipping through the stations only to stumble across 'Gangs of New York' on StarzHD in its OAR. Showtime HD has been pretty good with presenting their movies in their OAR, but I can't remember ever seeing HBO HD broadcast anything in it's OAR.

HBO HD is hit or miss. I've seen Episode 2 on HBO HD in 4:3 and 16:9 but not it's OAR of 2.35:1. But they did show The Fifth Element in both 4:3 and it's OAR of 2.35:1.

HD-DVD will hopefully look even better than movies on HBO HD. SOny's BluRay has the ability to produce movies in 1080p which is better than 1080i. HBO HD is in 1080i.

There is also a lot of compression happening during the broadcasts as well as there being a lot of problems during the sending of the signal.

HD-DVD and Bluray should look even cleaner and smoother than HBOHD.

That's all well and good, except most of the current displays cannot produce a 1080P image. Hell, most of the Digital displays are "only" 720P You have to gt into the LCOS, or higher end CRTs to get that kind of resolution. How many of you are willing to buy a new display just so your DVDs look better than HD? Me personaly, my goal is a 9" CRT set, so I'll be covered
