Blown Out Subwoofer

I was just wondering...I blew out my subwoofer and now it makes a rattling noise whenever a big LFE moment comes in a movie. Can I get this fixed or is my sub permanantly broken?

You should be able to just have the speaker/driver/transducer replaced.

What manufacturer is it? Also it will probably cost a decent amount, if it wasnt an expensive sub you might wanna just replace it. Either way call the manucaturer and find a service center near you. they will tell you exactly where you need to go.

May I ask how you know it's blown out? Is the driver seperated from it's enclosure?

I had a clicking noise manifest after I calibrated my system and it turned out to be some loose screws on the amp plate.

I guess I don't known its blown out...I had Fight Club on extremely loud and towards the end the sub started to rattle, so I just assumed I blew it out

Ok... .....does it "rattle" all the time now since the Fight Club instance? Exactly what do you hear? Explain "rattle" please...

like if there is a part with really low LFE, the sub makes a rattling noise...I really don't know how else to describe it...its almost like a crackling

Sorry man, I cant think of anything except that maybe you're pushing it too hard and the driver is wacking the stop plate inside, or maybe the "crackling" you hear is really a "chuffing" sound coming from the port. Or maybe it has a phase switch? If so, try and see if switching the phase helps?

There is a bright side though.....grab your $$ and upgrade!!

Explain please....my first thought to your response is he may create a bigger problem, especially if right now it's simply him pushing it too hard. To me plugging the port will wreak havoc on the sub if he's already going beyond it's limits with the port open.

Help me out here understanding the logic behind this suggestion.

What happens if you shake (gently) the subwoofer or maybe turn it on its side? Can you hear anything rattling around loose? Maybe something just worked loose.

If you blow the driver / voice coil / whatever you usually get a "rasping" or "scrapping" sound.

I'm confused, Silentbob. How exactly and why were/are plastic bags incorporated into your set-up?

I see what SilentBob is getting at.

A plastic shopping bag near or on the subwoofer could resonate or just pulse from the air being displaced by the woofer and cause a crackling / crinkling sound.

Ahh. Well, that makes sense. I just have an over-active imagination, I think.

Yeah what he said. I had my friend over to watch Blade II last week and we got some chips from our local store and i had to get off my bed to clean my disc (player kept freezing during scenes) I happened to do this just after the club/rave seen (awesome demo piece) and heard the crackling sound. At night i read this thread and thought "Oh crap i blew out my sub" Turns out the grocery bag my chips were in fell off my bed when i cleaning the disc and landed infront of my front firing sub. Simple and easy fix
