Popping noises from TV volume

Hey, I have been experiencing "popping" in my audio through the TV. My Sony XBR800 is hooked up to a Scientific Atlanta HD box via HD component cables supplied by Time Warner. These cables include the red and white audio cables and are hooked into one of 3 HD inputs in the back of my TV. When watching TV through the TV I get popping noises from my Sony. I turn the volume up, the popping gets louder. I turn the volume down the popping fades down too. But when I hook up my surround sound reciever and listen to it that way, the noises go away entirely (not coming through TV at all, so that means it isn't my cable company). I play video games without popping noises too. Could this be from the cables Time Warner gave me or my TV?? Is there interference? Anyone know what causes this popping? I sure as heck hope that it isn't my TV!!

Could be the audio amp in your set is on the fritz. When you hook up the sound to your surround amp are you using the same cables? Are you connecting the HD box audio directly to the surround amp?

If yes to both I'd suspect the TV amp.

My surround amp is hooked up into the HD converter box via Monster Digital Optical cable. The TV is hooked into the HD box via component cables supplied by Time Warner. If I choose to listen through the TV popping noises. If I choose to listen through surround amp, no popping noises. I haven't tried hooking up the Time Warner component cables to anything else (ie DVD) to see if it causes popping elsewhere. DVD is hooked up to surround amp via a second Monster Optical cable.

Make sure the TW cables as far away as possible from RF/EMI sources like power cables.

Do you have another set of analog cables available?

Is there a pre-amp analog audio out from the surround amp that can go to the TV? Try hooking it up there too.

Possible problems:

1) HD box
2) Cables
3) TV

Swapping the cables would eliminate the cables as a problem.

Swapping the audio source would eliminate the HD box as a problem.

Swapping both the source and the cables would leave the TV as the problem.

When you use the video game, how is the sound connected to the TV? Can those cables be swapped with the TW cables?

Thanks NotaNumber,

I switched out the TW analog audio cables for some spare Monsters I have from the HD box to the TV. Same popping noise. I hooked up my VCR with the same Monster analog cables and played a movie from Video 2 (HD comes through Video 5/6). No popping noises. So it isn't the cables and I am not 100% sure it is my TV now if I can play VCR and video games with no popping. Also, I ran the cable directly into my TV instead of into my HD box and no popping noise. So, does that mean it is my HD box?

Chance are it is the HD box. Call Time Warner or whoever for repair/replacement or and least trouble shooting. Tell them exactly what you have done.

Thanks. I also hooked the analog audio Monster Cables from my DVD straight to my TV (into Video 5) and my DVD played with no popping. So, it MUST be the HD box. What a relief. Thanks for your help.
