TIVO: 40 vs 80

Just wondering what some of you who have TIVO think, how much space do you really need on a TIVO? Obviously bigger is almost always better, but do those of you with a 40 player yearn often for more space, or do those with 80 often find you come no where close to using it all? Or is 80 really just necessary to be happy. No sense in spending extra cash on something I will not use, but also no sense in forcing myself to upgrade in a few months.

I have a 40 and find myself wishing I had a little more space. If you think you'll want to save some shows for later, get the 80. If you erase everything as soon as you watch it, the 40 should be fine.

I have a DirectTivo with a 40 gig HD. I have come nowhere near filling it up.

However, I don't let it record Tivo suggestions and I only have a handful of season passes. Right now there just isn't alot of TV that I consider must see.

Right now I have a season pass for:
American Idol
The Shield
Ebert & Roeper
Saturday Night Live (season just ended)
The Daily Show

I honestly can't recall others...

So 40 is OK for me.

I bought a Direct Tivo and put a HD in it that gives me 137GB. I use all of 'em.

I'd recommend going for the 80. You'll be surprised how fast that thing fills up.

Get the 80. Or if you're technically inclined, get the 40 and then just upgrade the hard drive (it's not that hard, and there's tons of walkthroughs over at tivocommunity.com)

A lot of the space you need probably really depends on how you use it. For instance, I tend to save up 5-10 episodes of my season passes and then watch them all at once....I do this with 24, The Shield, Alias, and Third Watch.

My wife also watches 2 soaps ( ) and she'll save up a week's worth, which is 5 episodes and then watch them on the weekend.

Without the extra space, I wouldn't be able to do that. I didn't want to get into a thing where I was forced to watch recordings to make room for other stuff.

I'm in the same boat as Rogue. I think that ours is like 30 or 35 G... we've never ran out of space, but we don't record that much stuff, and we're pretty dilligent about deleting stuff after we've watched it.

If you feel comfortable voiding your warranty and putting a bigger hard drive in later yourself, get the 40G and see how that suits you. You can find a 80G hard drive online these days for about $50. Otherwise I say use the "better safe than sorry" motto I've come to adopt and over-spend with.

Personally, I'm a ReplayTV fan.
