Odd image problem with HDTV
I'm watching DVDs on a 30" Dynaflat HD Samsung and, whenever there's a bright point in a film (mostly black and white films) in the upper right hand corner of the screen, I get this odd lingering discoloration in that same spot.
For example, if the film has a shot where there's a bright white spot (say the sun or a lightbulb) in the upper right hand corner a bluish stain will appear and stay in the same spot for a few minutes. It gradually fades away but it is definitely annoying. This television isn't very old (less than a year), isn't rear-projection and, to prevent burn-in, I'm very careful not to leave anything in pause for too long. Is my television a dud? Is this a common problem? Are there any ways to eliminate this annoyance? Any help is appreciated. Last edited by billyslits : 05-26-2004 at 03:10 AM. |

Have you calibrated your set? Is it still set in "torch" mode?
If you have not calibrated, do yourself a favor and grab either AVIA or Digital Video Essentials and spend 30-60 minutes calibrating your set. It does wonders. |

Do you have non-magnetically shielded speakers near the TV?

Thanks for the Digital Video Essentials advice. I've only calibrated my set using those THX set-up things offered on various DVDs.
There aren't any non-magnetically shielded speakers near my set. Those would cause permanent discoloration for as long as the magnet was placed near the screen, right? The problem I'm describing seems to correspond to any bright image that shows up in the upper right corner of the frame and it does eventually fade as long as no other bright images re-occur in that top right corner for an extended period of time. I'll try calibrating my set with the Digital Video Essentials disc. I've got a feeling it's a brightness / contrast issue. The only thing that sucks is, outside of this weird blue stain popping up, the picture looks perfect. If anything I set my television toward the darker, more contrasty level rather than having any blown-out whites or contaminated, grayish blacks. I don't know if that could be part of the problem. I guess I'll calibrate the bastard and see if it behaves. Thanks again. |
