PSB Subsonic 9

Curious, has anyone been able to audition this brand new subwoofer yet?

I would say this is a much better deal:

http://www.axiomaudio.com/epicenter500.html

This sub goes down to 15Hz versus the PSB's 28Hz. It also has a digital amplifier. For $500 less, I would much prefer the Axiom sub. I would definitely check out the Axiom sub if you are interested in subs above $1000.

Yeh, but I am more concerned about blending musically well with the mains and bass control than I am frequency extension. If I wanted frequency extension I'd go with a Bag End 18" which can do 8hz flat. My problem with the bag end, and it looks like the axiom has this too, is that when hitting artificial low frequencies (like in games for instance) for long periods of time it would overdrive the amp with the DSP chip in order to get that ultra-low extension, causing the sub to lose control or overheat. The PSB appears to have a DSP chip too but it looks primarily to regulate frequencies as opposed to sinificantly boosting amp output.

I'll check out the axiom tho if I can find a local dealer.

I've never heard of a "Class H" amp...

I always thought the Class A or B amps were generally considered "better". That's why I ask, since the lowest I've heard of is 'D'.

Just wondering...not trying to crap on the thing.

The beauty of Axiom is that they do not have a dealer. You get to call them and ask them your questions. I would definitely recommend calling them, they are extremely nice and do not give you bull.

They are also much smarter about HT than any salesman you likely have in your local store.

Also, PSB and Axiom actually match very well. Definitely check them out, they may not be for you, but they are such a great company, they are worth your time.

This is an excerpt of a review of the sub9's bigger brother, the subsonic 10:

"Another key to the Platinum’s success was the SubSonic 10, which performed at near-apocalyptic levels. Built like a bomb shelter, the cabinet was inert even at high volumes. The foreand aft-firing woofers created a balance that added to this sense of soundstage stability. Plummeting with ease into the mid-20Hz range, the SubSonic 10 seemed to yawn at the most difficult material I threw at it. From the subterranean murmurings of the Wanamaker Grant Court Organ [Magic, Dorian Recordings] to the pounding of the Taiko drums during “Air” [Thin Red Line, RCA], the SubSonic 10 delivered low frequencies like a howitzer lobbing artillery shells across a battlefield. Port noise was vanishingly low."

The 10 has dual 12s though, while the 9 only has dual 10s... hmm.

You could also get a great sub from HSU or SVS for that price.

I am quite curious why you are so hung up on PSB subs? Is it brand preference or have you done some side by side comparisons with other brands?
