Subwoofer placement and effectiveness??

For a front firing sub is there a certain way to place it for maximum effectiveness? For example: placing it in a corner or angle the direction of the woofer towards the wall?

Im clueless on this....looking for help...

Ive been told by several folks here that the corner is the best place, but I have mine in the center of the room. To me it feels better placed in the center than in the corner. I would just try it in different places and see what feels right for you.

That's your best bet. Subwoofer placement can be a tricky thing, and it can be different for each different room. Experiment as to what sounds/feels best for your situation.

It's true that generally corner placement will produce the strongest bass however at times it may sound too boomy .

Since furniture , floormaterials etc. all have an impact on the sound of the sub there is no foolproof position any of us can give you , you'll have to find out for yourself .

One rule of thumb though is to not have the sub fire at the opening to another room .

I've read that if you place your sub in your seating location and walk around the room until you're standing in the spot it sounds best, then put your sub where you were standing is one way to find 'the spot'.

However, I have yet to meet anyone who's actually done that. I mean, that to me is quite the pain in the toosh. So, if you are determined, try it.

Personally I've got mine placed dead center between the mains. It sounds good to me, but I do have a hump in the 40 and 65hz ranges and honestly, that could be my room. My room is square and that makes things tough in achieving audio bliss.

Yeah the method described above is supposedly the way to archieve the best results but most of us need the room to be functional so we can't you place the sub anywhere unless we want to trip over it at least five times a day .

Most of us have certain areas where we can locate a sub so that it doesn't get in the way of anything , the trick is to find the best spot in those areas .

Oh and I wouldn't suggest placing the sub next to glass or anything that makes too much noise when it is vibrated as that creates a really distracting rattling .

no, it was really easy.
I bought a 30 foot sub cable, hooked it up, dragged my 70lb sub onto my sofa, and started crawling around (crawling is recommended over walking), after about half an hour, I had the spot.
In the corner, about 2 feet forward of the front wall and about 1 foot in. Litterally within 8 inches of where I originally had it.

now, that I think about it, it was a pain in the ass.

good question... and i recently moved the subwoofer from its original spot, which pointed at a wall seperating two rooms. it caused a lot of rattling from things like my door... i don't know what i didn't think of it sooner, but i moved the subwoofer to point at the CHIMNEY of the house. eliminated the rattling and just produced a much cleaner sound. i think the best solution is to point it at a fixed wall or post -- by that i mean the perimeter walls of the house, and not a wall that seperates rooms [and now you all know why i'm not a contractor].

I agree doors definetly rattle when jolted by powerful enough bass frequencies .

I have a lot more trouble with windows actually. The glass in my 40s era double hung windows like to shimmy around when the sub kicks in.

Good advice in this thread. Low frequencies are hard to localize (you can't close your eyes and figure out where the sub is by listening to it) but the placement of the sub can make a big difference in the quality of the sound. I think that if you have a typical room setup where there are only a handful of sub placement options the best thing to do is try it in each of them and choose the one that sounds the best.

Yes in my bedroom Music system I have bookshelf speakers located near a window and one near the door and even though they are only bookshelf speakers they still manage to rattle the door and window .
