Progressive vs. Interlaced ???

Can you tell me the basics, then get down and dirty on which generally looks better given different displays?

(Denon DVD-3910 -->component-->Sanyo Z2 LCD PJ)

When switching between progressive and interlaced, what exactly should I look for as far as picture quality differences?

well, on a progresive display, progresive *should* look better, but you never know, most times on my semi HTPC, I don't even deinterlace.

also try materical created in interlace and simlar materal that is progresive

Little black horizontal lines across the entire picture. I know that I could see them before I got a progressive player. I can still see them when I watch a movie on someone else's player if it's interlaced.

Hey.

Well, the basics. An image is comprised of fields, odd and even lines. The odd lines of an image are displayed on the screen from top to bottom. Then the even lines are displayed, again top to bottom. Both odd and even interlaced fields are displayed at 1/60 of a second. You are seeing the entire image combined (odd and even lines) at 1/30 of a second. 60 fields per second or 30 frames per second...it's actually 29.97fps, but anyway.

A progressive signal, 720p for example, is displayed on your screen without the odd and even lines. Instead the entire image is displayed at once with a rate of 30fps.

I've got the 3910 as well, HDMI -> KD-34XBR960. When I switch between 480i to 720p or 1080i for example, there's a tremendous increase in picture quality. You're going to notice a reduction in aliasing or "jaggies" throughout the entire image right away.

Hope you're enjoying your 3910! I'm loving mine, simply amazing player.
