Question about coax audio out
Hey all, new here to the forum.
I just recently decided I need to replace my dvd player - It's a Sony, and I'm starting to get the dreaded C:13:00 error message. Of the players I've been looking at, some that interest me say they support 5.1 channel output, but when looking at the back of the unit, I don't see 6 separate plugs, only a "coax audio out" plug. My stereo, an all-in-one receiver/cd/radio, has 6 separate plugs, as does my current dvd player. My question is, can I use a dvd player that only has a coax audio out with my current stereo (is there a converter or something I can put in between the two)? Or do I need to break down and buy a new stereo receiver? Thanks for any help. -Kurt |

If you can, post the make/model of your receiver and DVD player so we can check out the specs, etc.
If your receiver has digital audio inputs, you can use the coax digital audio input if it has one. If it only has optical (toslink) digital audio inputs, you will need to use the optical (toslink) digital audio output from your DVD player. If your DVD player has 5.1 analog outputs and your receiver has 5.1 analog inputs and your DVD player has built-in DD (Dolby Digital) and dts decoders, you can let your DVD player decode the DD and dts audio and use the 5.1 analog connections to connect to your A/V receiver. If your DVD player has a digital audio output that your A/V receiver does not have a digital audio input for, you're almost screwed unless the DD/dts decoder part above applies. If your A/V receiver doesn't have Dolgy Pro-Logic II or dts-es (matrix or discrete) and other newer audio format support, you might want to consider replacing the receiver with a newer one with more digital audio inputs. Peace...
