DPI Question

I just bought a brand new Mistubishi 65" wiodescreen TV, and my DVD's are coming up as 480 DPI. I know they can't be 1080, but can there be a way to set to 720 DPI? Or am I just sadly lying in wait for DVDHD?

All DVDs are limited to an absolute resolution of 480 lines (not DPI). The are DVD players that will output at 720p or 1080i, but they are doing so by up-scaling the video resolution (which a HD display will do anyway). This can only benefit if the player outputs the exact resolution of your display, otherwise the display will just rescale it again. So in your case 720p won't buy you anything as your Mits will still convert it to 1080i.

Many believe these upscaling DVD players are the greatest thing since ice cream. I don't use one myself.

For true high def DVD at 720p or 1080i you'll have to wait until the new HD players and disks start hitting the market. Unfortunately, there are two incompatable competing formats (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray).

Personally, I think the market will be all screwed up until a single standard format emerges for hi def video disks.

DVD source material is only 480. The best you can hope for is 480progresive. However, there are players out there that, via HDMI or DVI, will upconvert the 480 signal to 720 or 1080. Some people argue that it is an imporvement in picture quality some people argue that it is not.

If your set accepts either DVI or HDMI you might want to pick up one of the players and play around with it. The Bravo D1 was the first big one, it can be had fairly cheap now-a-days, I think there is a D2 now too. There are a bunch of others now too, Samsung and Phliips both make upconverting players, as does Denon, but Im fairly certain the Denon is pretty expensive.

Thanks for the info, I just wanted to make sure that on my current roster of equipment, there was nothing I could do to change it.
