Avia Set up Question
I own Ovation software's Avia Home Theatre set up DVD . I really like it and I have already calibrated my sound system and my 36 inch Toshiba 4:3 Direct View TV .
I do have a few questions on some of the Video Calibrations . 1. My TV has three different colour temperature settings Cool (Factory setting) , Medium and Warm . Cool is supposed to lean towards more of a blueish tone , medium is neutral and warm is a red tone . Does it really matter what setting I have this one when I calibrate the colour and hue settings of my TV ? Each setting will probably give me different values but the end effect should theoretically be the same right ? On a further note my TV seems to have a red push so setting to warm would be stupid . 2. The sharpness Calibration . Is it just me or is this one a bastard to figure out ? For some reason when I move up and down the sharpness I don't get anywhere near the difference that they do in the demo and I don't quite get what to look for in this test despite the instructions . Any help would be greatly appreciated . |

(1) yup, wont matter in the end
(2) not quite sure. Probably has something to do with your set being direct view, and not having much trouble with sharpness.

Well I do notice a bit of a difference with the sharpness . When I crank it way up the lines on the scan on top of the test pattern fade away and white appears plus the picture would look granier but I do not get fake outlines . At the moment I have sharpness at about 40 . The factory setting was 50 and honestly I didn't think that was too bad either .
Anymore thoughts from anyone would be appreciated . |

My advice is to use the warm or low color temp setting. If the TV is set from the factory near spec this should get you closest to 6500k which is what DVDs and broadcasters calibrate to. Pull up the greyscale step pattern to see how well it tracks across the steps. The steps should look like neutral gray across but just getting higher in intensity. If you find that medium or high gives better results you can go with one of those but the color temp could be too intense and actually measure closer to 10000k which would be too bright even if it's more neutral. Let your eyes be the judge. Now setting your tint and color while in any of the other modes might not effect it if you switch later but you might as well select warm first before calibrating the rest.
As for sharpness if your trying to remove any artificial enhancements to your picture this should be as low as you can go without seeing as much of the thin vertical black lines blur together.

Well I think my colours are quite allright . It does have a red push but there is nothing I can do about that as I can't change it . Avia does suggest toning down the Colour saturation as a compromise of sorts but I find the red push only bothers me with skin tones so I instead decided to turn on the Flesh Tone correction after calibration was completed
( I'm not stupid enough to have it on during calibration.lol) I think my sharpness is not bad , I may have to go back at some point and look at it again . |

I think I have just learned why my TVs has barely a reaction to the sharpness setting . It has Velocity Scan Modulation which means there won't be much of a difference in the sharpness test pattern . Unfortunatly I can't turn it off unless perhaps I would go into the service menu .
I could probably also correct the red push with the service menu. |
