It's interesting that a "lowly" DVD/VCR Combo scored the best out of all the players tested, even the "better" DVD Only pieces. I might have to check out this little gem

Its nice to see Panny back above the dennon, although it is getting closer in price
I may just have to check out that Toshiba combo unit as well...do you know if VHS will play out of the HDMI, or even the component outputs? or do you need to sets of cables?

It seems all DVDs players have their weaknesses , even really expensive ones .
I noticed that DVD players with these HDMI outputs are in fashion now . Suppose one had a TV with such an input ( I don't ) would it really be worth it ? To me it seems these DVD players just do what would otherwise be done by the High Definition capable TV . |

HDMI/DVI keeps the video information digital, so there is no quality loss by using a D/A converter (which would be required if you were using component/s-video/composite cables, for instance).

I see . These days some DVD players have faster D/A Video Converters than mine with 12 bit and 108mhz so that should be better too .
Of coarse if I had a new TV and such an input available I would use it and once I got a new TV I would have to get a new DVD player anyway as my current one is not Progressive scan capable but since my current TV is not a HDTV it wouldn't do me any good anyway . Who knows though by the time I get a new TV we may have true High Definition DVDs either curtesy of Blue Ray or HD-DVD. Supposedly Sony Playstation 3 will feature Blue Ray .... |
