It's new TV time! (advice wanted)

ok, luckily no e-mails to the wife are needed for this one

Here's the deal...

$3000 to play with
Ideally 1080p
50"+ but not much bigger than that.

I've been looking at the Sammy HL-R5678W 56" DLP but wanted to hear some suggestions before I took the plunge.

Mart.

I think the new Sony SXRDs are pretty compelling. But then again,I haven't seen the Sammy DLP.

Do you want a TV that displays 1080p or has a 1080p input? You won't find one (I don't think) with a 1080p input for $4k but there are several in that price range that display 1080p:

Toshba 62HM195: 62" DLP w/ 1080p display, MSRP: $3699

Toshiba 56HM195: 56" DLP w/ 1080p display, MSRP: $3199

JVC HD56FH96: 56" LCoS w/ 1080p display, MSRP: $4999 (probably cheaper online or in stores)

Samsung HLR5688: 56" DLP w/ 1080p display: MSRP: $4999 (AWESOME sale at Onecall.com Move the mouse over the "add to cart" button )

These are just a start. If you buy from Onecall.com, it looks like you can get some killer prices.

Peace...

I'm trying to work out the difference between the Samsung 5688 and the 5678. The 5688 looks nice but space is limited and that stand is so impractical.

Well, the 5688 displays 1080p natively where the 5678 displays 720p natively. If they are the same physical dimensions, the 5688 would be the one to get (if you're stuck on the Samsung brand) since it displays 1080p natively.

Of course, be sure to see what folks are saying at Home Theater SPot if you have a membership.

EDIT: I'm sorry, I'm a complete idiot. I looked at the wrong set on the Samsung website when I posted the 720p comment.

Sorry about that.

EDIT #2: I would take a close look at the Toshiba 56HM195. It offers the same features as the Samsung, has a lower MSRP (meaning lower street price) AND it features memory card slots for SD and other kinds of cards so you could view images from a digital camera card directly on the TV. I don't believe the Samsung has that feature. I don't know what the contrast ratio is on the Toshiba.

EDIT #3: According to Crutchfield, the contrast ratio of the Toshiba is 5000:1. Does a higher contrast ratio generally mean 'better' picture or brighter picture?

Peace...

3K....oh my....isn't it GREAT getting ready to blow, I mean 'spend' that cash?

It's honestly a little late for me to make suggestions, but I will say I gotta go demo more of the latest DLP's for their contrast alone. You got a great dilemma in front of you Sid'!

Thanks for the tips fellas (especially Tom) -- I have a few weeks so I'll check all this info out although it doesn't make much sense that a TV can display 1080p but doesn't have the inputs for it

I've had good experience with Samsung in the past and the fact they sponsor my soccer team back home as well is a plus

Sure it does since TVs can de-interlace video much better than they could a few years ago, the "need" for a de-interlaced input has been drastically reduced.

Good luck with your purchase and try to audition these sets, if you can.

Peace...

Man i want a new TV and i want one now. I'm not allowe duntil maybe after the summer and it looks like the wait might be worth it. A new set of TV's are coming out from Toshiba that are suppose to be pretty close to Plasma/LCD/DLP pricing too with 100,000:1 contrast ratio.

Watch out and maybe you shoudl wait until the fall for the new SED TV's

It's pricing isn't confirmed, but this snippet from the linked article says alot IMO.

The electronics maker showcased prototype SED sets at CES and every IGN editor on-hand was in agreement: nothing else compares.

So how does it all work? SED sets use 6,220,800 electron emitters - or one for each color per pixel, to be precise - which cause red, blue and green phosphors to glow. That may not mean much to most, but the results will definitely matter. Toshiba's CES 2006 SED sets featured the deepest black levels we have ever seen on any television, including CRT - and these televisions are as flat as any plasma! Consider this: the typical plasma set sports a contrast ratio of 3000:1, but Toshiba's prototype SEDs offer a whopping 10,000:1 contrast ratio for truly unparalleled color and accuracy.

I'm definitely curious to see what they're going to be priced but I have a feeling that it would be more than I can afford right now. They do sound incredible though!

Ok, I've been auditioning and trying out sets over the last couple of days with my DVD player and a copy of Sith in hand. DLP did not impress especially up against the plasma displays that I've seen. It just didn't seem as clear or vibrant.

It looks like it's gonna be the Samsung HP-R5052. I can get it for a ridiculous price online and I don't have to get a new stand for it either so I'll be coming in under-budget. Screen size is smaller because 56" would have been just a bit too much for the room that it will be in. 50" was just right.

Should have it within the next few weeks

Isn't it? After getting used to my new TV I just sit back and bask in the joy and wonder of it all. There is nothing like 50+ inches of HDTV goodness.

You can't go wrong with Pixar. The Incredibles has fantastic colors, a lot of motion, and the blacks are deep. A perfect TV tester.

Don't forget if you do watch something Fullscreen thru your VCR to use high quality Composite cables. They usually come with the VCR.

I know the first thing I'm going to do and this might sound daft is play something with the old THX intro (with the blue oblong round it).

Why? I spent ages trying to get the geometry right on the old Samsung and I could never get it exactly right no matter how hard I tried and that THX oblong always had a curve to it (slight but it was there). I know that Plasmas don't have this problem so I just wanna see it perfectly displayed.

What an idiot.

Sweet Jumping Jesus man...when is that thing getting installed?

Personally, I would play Batman Begins FIRST.

YMMV...
