XBOX 360 DVD player > Panasonic RP82 Standalone?

Anyone do any in-depth tests of the X360 DVD player at 480p (it doesn't upscale)? I informally compared it to my RP82 and it seemed to offer a more stable, detailed picture than the RP82 (which is often hailed as one of the best 480p dvd players ever made). Skips chapters/branches/layer changes much faster too. Overall it seems better than the RP82, though the LFE on the XBOX360's 5.1 output seems to be cooked up just like on XBOX1.

Taken from The Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity website:

XBOX 360 scores a 71 on their benchmark.

PanasonicDVD-RP82 scores a 91 on their benchmark.

The quickness in response is to be expected form the 360 (especially over the older RP82)...but as for the better perceived video quality you're seeing, well, ...but hey...if you feel that it's giving you a better picture then run with it...

Oh my....good post man. I can't wait to see how these new consoles fair compared to stand alone players.

When I get my "switcher" and the 360 moved into my HT I would love to compare it to the Denon 3910.

Good post dude!

(yes, I'm being serious for once)

The link you posted doesn't comment on video quality, only how the player handles poorly encoded discs. On a properly encoded disc (which are the majority), it looks better than the RP82 at least on the couple of superbit titles i tried.

It does suffer from the common 4:2:0 ICP CUE issue, but as we’ve reported before, this takes special filters to hide. Its severity is not bad at all here and was actually one of the better players I’ve tested in this regard. The 360 passes a below black pluge, but its default black level is 7.5 IRE with no way of adjusting it to 0 IRE. You’ll have to adjust your display accordingly, as black levels will appear elevated. The white level of this player is a tad low at 98 IRE but still within our passing criteria. I wish manufacturers would pay closer attention to their output levels, as a properly calibrated display will have to be re-adjusted for these issues.

Pixel cropping is pretty much a non-issue. The bottom of the image crops 2 pixels, while the right crops 1. The 360 does suffer from over a full pixel of Y/C delay with DVDs though. The video frequency response of the component video output is very good, with only a small decline in the upper frequency range. The image is not what I would categorize as soft, but it is not nearly as sharp as the digital players I normally use in my system.
I'd say that they do comment quite a bit on on it's video quality...from their write up, one can discern that the 360 might tend to crush blacks a bit (though it does pass pluge), might not seem as "bright" with whites and may lack some of the detail of better players due to it's slightly rolled off frequency response. All of this is, of course, dependent on other factors like one's display and/or preference. Like I said, if it looks better to you then run with it.

The Secrets reports rate how well a player's video performance (including quality) holds up when given poorly encoded discs, which seem to be more prevalent than we might think. Probably not in the majority but not an insignificant minority either.

However, your overall point is right. The Secrets reports don't address overall DVD player image quality when fed good material as well as bad material.

Given this, any XBox comparisons to other DVD players will be subjective.

Peace...
