PCM Down Sampling - 96KHz to 48KHz

I just bought new a DVD player (Samsung DVD-HD850) and one of the settings under the Audio menu is "PCM Down Sampling." You can set it to either on or off.

The manual says this about the setting:

"On: Select this when the Amplifier connected to the player is not 96KHz compatible. In this case, the 96KHz signals will be down converted to 48 KHz.

Off: Select this when the Amplifier connected to the player is 96KHz compatible. In this case all signals wil be output without any changes."

I'm not sure what this means. I've checked the technical specifications of my receiver (Panasonic SA-XR55S) but I'm still not sure what to set "PCM Down Sampling" to. From what I can tell, it doesn't mention whether the receiver supports 96KHz or 48KHz.

Does anyone have any knowledge which may shed any light on this?

Unless your receiver can accept a 96Khz audio input, you will need the PCM downconversion. My receiver has a 96Khz LED but I don't think it accepts a 96Khz input. When I've tried outputting a 96Khz signal from my DVD player, I get no audio.

Peace...

Ok... stupid question time. How can I tell if my receiver accepts 96KHz audio input?

I can't find anything about it in the manual, and the technical specs on the website doesn't seem to say anything about it either.

Perhaps there's something there that I'm not seeing. Here's a link to the specs:

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps. Look into my eye.

Seriously, if your manual doesn't state anything about accepting a 96Khz audio signal, I would assume it doesn't support it so you'll need the PCM down sample.

Peace...

Nope, I was wrong. My 96Khz problem is on the DVD player side of this equation.

Peace...

Yeah, I saw that, but I wasn't sure if that meant it supported 96KHz. I wasn't sure if 96/24 referred to the same thing or not, but from Tomdkat's picture I'm assuming it probably does.

So I guess I'll turn it off, since my receiver supports it. At least for DTS. I guess if there's suddenly no sound I can turn it on again.

Thanks for the help everyone.
