Your Projector Screen

I'm thinking of completely rebuilding my screen or buying one. Not for any reason other than I'm nuts and I like to take things apart and make life complicated.

Anyway, some questions...

If you bought your screen:

1. What kind is it?

2. Where'd you buy it?

3. Pros?

4. Cons?

If it's a DIY screen:

1. How'd you build it (materials, etc)?

2. Do you have specs or blueprints?

3. Pros?

4. Cons?

Thanks
-PH

My screen is a 119in 16:9 Da-Lite perm wall screen. I paid around $600 from AVS. It's a very basic model, hence the low price. Basically it's an aluminum frame, and it's screwed to the wall. The screen attaches to the frame using buttons all along the edges(about every 6 inches). It's stretched extremley tight, making for a nice smooth surphace. The whole deal is very light, I doubt it weights more than 5lbs all together.

The only con was that there were no holes in the frame to put the screws that attach it to the wall, you have to drill them yourself, but that was very simple(one on top, bottom, left and right).

I got this screen after a year of using a pulldown screen, and I must recommend that you NEVER EVER buy a pulldown. If they don't have waves to start with(like mine did), they'll develop them in about 6 months, drives you nuts during panning shots.

Just contact AVS, tell them you want a perm wall screen, the size you need, what screen material you want, for the least amount of money possible, and you'll get what I have.

Like Pliss, I too have a DA-LITE Perm Wall 16x9. Mine is High Contrast (not white, but slightly grey) and 92". I forget what I paid, it came with two Sanyo Z2's and for the life of me, I can't find the receipt.

However, unlike Pliss, I simply measured the depth of the aluminum frame and screwed 3 screws into the wall. As a result, I simply hung the top part of the frame on the screws. The screw heads are just beyond the inner part of the frame. Easy to put up and if needed, easy to take down.

Pros; Better contrast with little to no ambient light.

Cons; None that I can think of.

67Tempest (my friend who NEVER posts ) made his own. He simply took a full sheet of dryway resulting in a 16x9 96" screen size. He painted it with some kinda screen paint (I'll try and find out exactly what it was) and his Dad made a nice black frame for it. He used picture frame material since that's his side business after retiring.

Edited - it's 67Tempest not Tempest67. Christ...it's been so long even I forgot.

I'm currently using a sheet of drywall, painted with a combination of materials I got at Homedepot.

But I'm buying a Carada in the next couple of days, just as soon as I decide if I want the 92 or 96.

I thought I read somewhere that screen won't work if there are Axiom surrounds installed...

I could be mistaken.

Peace...

I take it all back, Tom. My Axiom's are the best speakers ever! No one on this forum or any forum has better speakers than me. No theatre in the world can match the power of my Axioms! Now go jump off of something high.
