Are you getting all the HDTV resolution you expected?

That is the title of an article in the March 2006 issue of Home Theater magazine. Basically, it talks about some HDTVs not actually processing 1080i fully but taking 540 lines (one interlaced field) and upsampling to a 1080 line frame and displaying that.

Why is that done? So cheaper de-interlacing gear can be used.

In any event, read the article. It has a chart of current TVs that passed or failed a 1080i test they conducted.

Peace...

I don't care to but the list DID explicitly state Vonner's HDTV failed the test since it took the 540 lines, split those in half, reversed them, and upconverted that to 475p and displayed it.

Peace...

I think he was messing with ya man....but if not, sorry.

It's funny how he's created a panic of sorts and yet...do any of us really care what Home Theater says? I don't.

(tell me my tv passed! puhleez!!!!!! )

It wasn't tested. They tested about 50 or so LCD, plasma, and DLP TVs.

EDIT: 54 sets were tested, 28 passed and 26 didn't.

Peace...

Thanks for giving me permission to check on your TV for you.

Feel free to pick up a copy of the magazine...

Your TV wasn't tested BUT the one Hitachi that was tested, the 60VX915 @ 720p did pass.

EDIT: For all you 1080p 'nutz' out there, here is something to chew on. Three 1080p sets by Mitsubishi (WD-52627 (DLP), WD-73927 (DLP), WD-62627 (DLP)) did not pass their test.

Peace...

As long as your looking, tomdkat, how about gandering for a Toshiba 56HM195 (DLP). Your effort would be much appreciated by someone, I'm sure.

How much appreciation would there be? How would that appreciation be expressed?

I just so happen to be looking at the Toshiba section of the test results. There are three Toshiba sets listed.

The 56HM195
Spoiler (Highlight or Triple Click to Read):
wears granny panties!
So, there you have it.

Sorry guys, no more lookups by me. One question that has surprisingly not been asked (shame on all of you) is what test did they perform on the TVs to determine if the set processed 1080i fully or not.

Pick up the magazine and read the article.

Peace...

My tv passed, but it was weird that it was tested on 720p instead of 1080i. Why would that have been done?

Well out of the three sets I am looking at one was tested and passed. It is the Sony 42 inch Grand Wega 42 A10 LCD model. The other two Philips 42 inch LCD 42PF7421D wasn't tested and neither was the 42 inch Westighouse 1080P monitor.

is there a newer test done?

am I correct in that this was done on 2005 models?

I got an e-mail about a great sale at Circuit City, and most of the models are not on that test for Panasonic or Samsung.

You'll have to contact the magazine and ask them.

Most of the HDTVs on the market weren't part of the test. I'm not sure how you would confirm if any given HDTV displays the full 1080 resolution or not. Maybe sticking with brands and models close to the ones that were tested is a starting point.

Peace...

ARGH! I just looked at the CC website and the 42in Sony was gone . Well the wife and I are going tomorrow to see if the store has one. On the bright side they do have the larger 46 inch model.

Hurry up Christmas.

Called the 2 nearest CC's and neither had them. So I check Sony's website and it has been taken off it. My advice if you have been waiting now is the time to buy it if you can find it.

Great news! The November 2006 issue of Home Theater magazine has an update to this test, where they test 61 current HD displays, including Plasma, LCD, DLP (RP), and LCoS TVs. This time around, they added a 3:2 cadence test.

What I found most interesting is none of the Panasonic Plasma TVs passed the 3:2 cadence test (using factory default settings, at least) where the two Pioneer Plasmas tested did pass.

Anywho, this issue is definitely worth picking up!

Peace...
