Wow, I really like SPDIF...

Mainly because I could run it through almost 40ft of shitty speaker wire, and it still works fine, it's not the best tests conditions, but it's most definalty complelty listenable, except theres a hiccup every now and then, but other then that, it's great.

44.1kHz and 48kHz PCM was tested, both worked, Dolby Digital @ 448kbps works and dts at 768kbps works, I'm kinda suprised, more so because it's being inputted into my Audigy 2 soundcard with just a RCA connector and no termination(rigged that up today...), ya, I'm having a lazy day

Hmmmm... maybe the cable quality on that digital connection doesn't matter....

S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) is a standard audio transfer file format. It is usually found on digital audio equipment such as a DAT (Digital Audio Tape) machine or audio processing device. It allows the transfer of audio from one file to another without the conversion to and from an analog format, which could degrade the signal quality.
The most common connector used with an S/PDIF interface is the RCA connector, the same one used for consumer audio products. An optical connector is also sometimes used.

Thanks 1138, and my next foolish question will be directed at Sycho. What's with the 'hiccups'?

I think that's just times where, for whatever reason, the signal degrades too much to be maintained and it drops out.

Correct, but I think it was more from the loss connections, rather then the shitty quailty cable. Soon I will round out as much cable and crap as possible and see how far I could push it... Think Chromy's cable but 100ft long...

So I'll post a video with the results of the cable, it's interesting...

It should be up in about 30min.

So here is the video, it's about 9MB

http://members.shaw.ca/sycho/SPDIF.wmv

So what's happening?

Well I ran some speaker wire and coax and just some generic wire connected from my Toshiba DVD player downstairs up stairs into my Creative Audigy 2 ZS soundcard ( made a SPDIF input connected to the CD Digital header on the card). The input on the sound card is not terminated, so results may be completly different once I throw a 73ohm resistor on the SPDIF. There has been plently of drop out, but more so because the dog ran over the coax to speaker wire connection on the stairs and it's loose, but when it's playing it is completely listenable.

it's march break and the teachers were on strike for 4 of the 5 school days of the week before the break. So, yah I'm really borad, and I just proved you don't need a fancy cable to transmitt digital audio. Did it do it the best? No, but it certianly shows how tough the signal is, remember digital coax is only +/- 500mV!
