5.1 into 3 front channels???

Is it possible to dump the 5.1 channels of audio into 3 front speakers and still have some decent seperation, effects, and even a pseudo surround type sound?

If so, suggest some cheap ways to pull this off.

Thanks!

yes, this can be done cheaply.

most players/decoders that are set up for only 3 fronts channels will dump the surround left into the front left channel, and dump the surround right into the front right channel. IMHO, this is the best way of doing it, because pseudo surround can sound wierd to alot of people, and really lose that surround effect.

Some cheap ways of doing this would be to enlist the help of the knowledgable forum youngster that is currently completing his second year of Electrical Engineering Control Systems, to make you a 6CH to 3CH device with a volume control and controlable gain and downmix for each channel. (just ignore his poor spelling )

Are you soliciting me? You shameful young lad you!

I may take you up on that dude. Let me explore other options and if I go for the "Sycho 3 channel surround system", I will pm you.

Thanks again.

For now....what cheap ass receivers are capable of performing this task even if they cant as well as the soon to be S3CSS?

nearly every receiver avalible today has the option to downfold the surround channels into the main channels, many also have the "pseudo surround" effect...

Just curious if you're going to go to such an extreme why not just stick with stereo ?

because of the extreme width of the screen.

Wouldn't a more practical solution be to get a speaker system that supported this? I've been seeing ads in Home Theater magazine for speakers in a bar placed where the center channel normally goes and providing a "full" surround sound experience.

Peace...

But the application is for an outdoor projection screen, so having some big PA monitors like Iggy was looking into in the other thread will be mighty fine using 3 front channels in an outdoor environment...

Gotcha. Iggy, would you actually trust anything Sycho would make?

Peace...

Sure, why not! Besides, if it failed miserably I would spend the rest of my life reminding him of that very fact. J/K Sycho.

Ok, let's here more about this device Sycho. Explain it in terms I can understand too. Will it be hooked up to a 5.1 avr I assume? Remember, I want to minimize wires and cabling and I want to do it as cheaply as possible. Oh, and just to throw a potential wrench in all this, I may try incorporating an fm transmitter so I can run little fm radios with earplugs to the kiddies and possibly to some car radios.

So lets hear what ya' got and I'll consider it.

Most Dolby Pro Logic decoders have a 3ch setup built right in. Pick up a rather inexpensive DD receiver and in the setup, set the rears to no. This should be what you are looking for. Just make sure that it has pre-amp outputs so you can connect it to the PA Amps...

You are defiantly talking to the FM radio GOD!!!!!!!
I owned all the FM radio assignments and quizes and test in my cource, I owned them, thats right, I took those tests/quizzes/assignments, bent them over the table, and made them my bitch...

I'll ask my teach on the feasablity of a diy stereo fm transmitter... If not DIY, rat shack and other places have farily inexpensive ones...

Thanks man...and guess what this leads to? My living room has an older Pio VSX-D603S. It's Pro Logic. Now I could take that out and use it for the Drive In, then take my Elite VSX-24TX out of my HT room and put it in the living room, then.....buy a new AVR for the HT room and .. ..

No - must resist - no no no...this domino effect is killing my wallet.

I think I'll be hiting up one of those cheaper avr's instead.
