Just wondering, who has Tivo?

If you listen to advertisers, everyone and their dog has a Tivo, yet I'm the only person I know who actually has one. So just wondering, with these things being as cheap as $100, who has one(or the equivelent i.e DVR)?

I work with a handful of people who have either TiVo or ReplayTV. TiVo is very popular.

Peace...

We have come close to pulling the trigger on one several times, but either don't get around to it, or don't have the cash, or something new postpones the decision. Actually, on several occassions, I was given the choice between Tivo and A/V hardware, and for some reason, new speakers and such always wins. :P Last year (or last time I looked), it was the advent of new home media features (i.e. TivoToGo), and I was waiting for that to all pan out and be implemented on all Tivo boxes (i.e. DVD Tivos).

My uncle has had Tivo for ages, almost from the beginning, and they swear by that thing. For us, at a time with a baby in the house and tighter budgets, I'm afraid to get into a monthly fee for something I just *know* we'll never get rid of once we've tasted it. Especially considering how we've been trying cut and de-emphasize television in our home, from what I would consider casual TV viewing to begin with. Nevertheless, I'm certain we'll have one very soon, since it would actually help us fit TV around our lives, rather than structuring our lives around TV; especially Sunday races.

Well when i bought my new tv i got a free HDTV PVR system for free for the year. I can't believe i went this long without this device. The thing is awesome but i haven't used it too pause any tv shows but have almost 12 SCRUBS episodes in HD on my device. I love having it handy when i have to work and i will miss my fav show. Like tonight i have SCRUBS and HOUSE being recorded while i work 6 - 1. I will probably watch them tomorrow and delete and have it ready for next week.

If you don't have one i suggest you do.

There's quite a few at my house. Once you have the ability to watch TV shows at your own leisure with the ability to go back if you missed something, you'll never want to go back.

I thought about getting one, but if I were to get one I'd want one that records HDTV in it's HD format. Is there one out there that does that? I could look it up, but right now I'm too lazy.

Nobody I know has one. I've been contemplating getting a DVR-type of device that has a DVD recorder built-in. Since TiVo doesn't seem to have one of these, it's unlikely I'll get one.

Yes, a Tivo DVR. And yes, it's been replaced by DirecTv after less than a year (?) because my first one crapped out.

Does what a VCR was meant to do in the first place! Meaning...it's EASY to record.

Yes there is, it'll run you $400. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...C-pr1c3grabb3r Or if you don't have HDTV already, DirecTV offers it at that price, plus two other recievers and the Dish.

I'm going to upgrade to the HD-Tivo myself, likely late May. Mine is 3 years old, and takes forever to do certain things, and I can't wait to finally get some HD. The wait time is three minutes for it to record a show

Well i have a Motorola Dual-Tuner DVR High-Definition DCT6412 120BGB from my local cable provider. Records somewhere between 12-18 hours of HD shows with the 5.1 Dolby track and like 70-90 hours of standard cable shows.

I have a DirecTV/Tivo unit. I don't know what I did without it. I unplugged my VCR the day I got the DVR and haven't touched it since.

DVR from Chartes Communications for me. I used to have Direct tv but I moved and there was nowhere to get a signal. I really like the DVR though because now I can watch the recorded shows when I want to.

I have two DirecTV TiVo units. One is HD and the other is SD. The HD is in the living room while the SD is in the bedroom. We're contemplating getting a third TiVo, this time for the gym. We love them and could never ever be without one again.

My cable company supplied me with the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300.

http://www.sciatl.com/consumers_new/...xes/8300hd.htm

It's got two tuners and records 20 hours of HD with DD 5.1 or 90 hours of SD. (of course you can mix and match) The DVR is really the best (only?) way to go for recording HD.

Well, if you consider your comrades here people you "know", it looks like you know far more TiVo owners than you thought.

Peace...

Like Reaver said, they're certainly out there...

IIRC, even with the cheaper models with no optical drive, you can connect to the Tivo box with your PC via the Home Media Features, or more specifically, use TivoToGo to transfer recordings to your PC. I would imagine that you would have some ability to burn DVDs there. Whether they use a proprietary video format or not would effect what, if any, limitations there would be. At any rate, that's my intended path since we cannot afford nor need an HD capable Tivo, but I'd rather get a cheap box now that can be retired to another room when an HD Tivo becomes realistic for us.

Cool, but are there any straight up Tvio ones? I don't need a DirectTV tuner. Don't have DirectTV.

There are a lot of PVR/DVR what ever you want to call them but the thing that separates Tivo is it's ability to adjust itself to the show that you want to record. It has a host of other features but this one is the most useful.

Most of these systems simply record what ever is on a channel a certain time. If the show gets moved in the schedule e.g., Amazing Race from Tuesday to Wednesday the PVR doesn’t know. But Tivo does.

You pay for the service but it's well worth it in my opinion. Now that they have an HD unit it’s even more tempting.

Yep, it's not quite out yet. The upgrade Tivo is making decodes in MPEG4, and is seperate from DTV, in fact I don't think it will work with DTV at all.

For several years, I have had a DVR/receiver from DiSH Network. My wife is addicted to it. Not so much for the recording function, but for the "pause and rewind live TV" aspect.

I wanted to upgrade our DiSH service to HDTV when we bought a HDTV set, but DiSH does not lease the HDTV box that has a DVR , only the non-recordable box. You have to pay $300 or so for the DVR/HDTV dual tuner box. Since my TV has a built in off-air tuner, I'm doing without the HDTV DVR for now.

I would not care much for TiVO. I scarcely have time to watch the programs I've consciously recorded. if the box were recording yet more programs it thinks I should watch, Id never get through them all. I do like the way you merely page through the DiSH grid and hit "select" to set a program to record.

I have 2 RepalyTVs that are currently being used with DirecTV. Both are standard def, as Replay never made an HD model, as far as I know. They may change that in the future, as I understand they are going out of the set-top box business and introducing what is basically a HTPC kit.

Next month we are moving and changing back to Comcast, through which I may eventually get a HD-DVR through. Right now we are just getting an HD box, so I can see if it'll help convince the wife that we need HD.
