Subwoofer...

Okay.

I own one of those HTS in a box things and my sub is shot. It farts all the time and sounds like shit. I want to get a new one, but I went to PC Richards and the guy told me they don't sell them if they don't have the analog plugs. Mine is regular speaker wires like ones you put in a car.

Does anyone know where to get just a sub? I can't seem to find any.

Thanks in advance.

If you get a subwoofer with speaker level inputs, then you can just connect the amplified subwoofer output to the speaker level inputs in the subwoofer.

It looks like your old sub was a passive sub; no built in amplifier. Instead, the sub is powered by the amp in the receiver.

If your receiver does not have a line level sub/LFE output (RCA jack), a active sub (has its own amp) with speaker level inputs, like mentioned, is what you would need.

You could try to find another passive sub, but I think you'd have trouble. For one, they're generally only found in packaged systems like yours, and you would need to be carefull to match the ohm ratings of the original. With an active sub, that's not an issue.

Bo...

If you get a sub with this kind of input, it will work for you. This one is at Crutchfield for $99us. It should work just fine, and you might notice a big improvement in sound with it. Sony also offers one in a 10" IIRC, for about $200us.

Yeah, it sucks because I can't REALLY test it tonight because I live above my landlord and she'll get pissed. I'll have to wait till she leaves or something.

When in phase, the diaphragms of the speakers push out at the same time. Do to the position of speakers and interaction with the room, the output of your subwoofer may interfere destructively (i.e. cancelling out) with the sound produced by the other speakers. Because of this, running the subwoofer 180 degrees out of phase may result in more output. You simply experiment with the setting, and select the setting the provides the best output.
