Astrakan,

I can get that Samsung DVD-HD850 for $60 and I'm thinking about taking a (another) chance. Do you happen to know if the player can do native PAL? I prefer that over the conversion.

Thanks

Sorry, I don't. It's hooked up and I have plenty of PAL movies, so if you know of a way to check I'd be happy to do so.

Does PAL look like it's sped-up a bit on your TV? Usually when the player is doing the conversion (unless it's really good), the PAL discs will look sped-up.

It doesn't look sped up, but whenever I watch one particular TV show it pauses for a split second every 10 minutes. It's only ever happened on that one TV show, so I'm thinking it's more of an authoring issue than anything else, but who knows...

Visually you probably wouldn't notice the PAL speed-up but you might notice the audio if you're sensitive to that kind of thing. Personally I've never noticed it but saying that I've never looked for it purposely as I know it exists and there is flip all you can do about it. Even if the player is really good (which at conversion the Oppo is) there is no real way round it -- WinDVD has a "TruSpeed" feature to to make up for it but it doesn't do it convincingly

I can most definitely see the speed-up on a few of my DVD players. The audio is also noticeable, but the speed-up bothers me more.

I just ordered my 4th DVD player in less than 2 months. I took Astrakan's advice, but went a few models up. I got the Samsung HD950. According to the few owners I've spoken to, the player does native PAL, so the speed-up should not be an issue.

I’ll report back when it arrives. Fingers crossed.

So, I noticed that you weren't happy with the Samsung. To that I can only say:

BAH!

You, sir, are impossible to please.

KM

P.S.
Oh, and sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase.

Actually, the Samsung is the closest I've come to an acceptable option, so no worries.

The thing that drove me nuts about the Samsung was the preset video options. You should be able to choose an "off" or "0" setting for those.
