Maybe a new receiver for me. Thoughts?

Well chlngr got a bew receiver and well i kind of have one on order but i havve 5 days to pick it up IF I REALLY WANT IT (which i do but the allet says other wise) Well after going HD-DVD and Blu-ray its hard too enjoy the ormal Dolby DIgital tracks when there is TrueHD and LPCM tracks out there. So Future Shop has this big Easter weekend sale online and i have this on a pick-up order, but wont be charged on my card if i don't well pick it up in 5 days. More time to think iit over possible purchase before i would lose out on the $100 in saving.

Anyways here is what i was thinking on getting. Pioneer VSX-917V-K for $399 Cnd

Currently i have a Marantz SR-4300 but when i watch a movie with my Optical Cable the receiver will sometimes randomly change to Multi Channel Stereo in the movie and Video Game playing instead of staying in Dolby Digital /EX

So thoughts on the receiver would be great and hopefully things will work out for me and i will maybe try to sell my old receiver off to help pay for this new one. Hard to believe i have had the Marntz for something like 4-5 years

Summer is going to see a lot of activity on the receiver front. Denon is releasing a whole slew of HDMI 1.3 receivers. I imagine that the Elite line will update at CEDIA. Sherwoods Newcastle line is supposed to be out this summer as well. What is your limit on price? Is that 400CDN about the limit?

Really

Well ever mind then. I thought it did and how do i look for the TrueHD r LPCM support on a receiver. Also the $400 limit was the highest i was thinking about going for at this moment.

IIRC, the Yamaha 661 is an HDMI audio capable receiver...but it comes in at $499US here in the states. Now, if you happened to know someone that worked for a dealer...

How would sending one of the US units to CA work? Just curious

Well conversion and the duty charge ontop of the receiver will maybe cost me another $100-200 extra on the initial cost. Maybe this is just another sign for me to hang onto my money and enjoy what i have for now and wait until later. Cancelled my order from Future Shop and i shall see what comes up in the near future then.

Thanks for your help

kk, glad I could be of some help to you

If it were me, and I wanted a receiver real bad ( ) I would look at the new Yamaha line. I know the BBY down here is carying the RXV now, and the 661 looks like a great Bang for the Buck unit. It is 549 retail, which means you could conceivably (sp?) find it for $315US plus sales tax here
Duty and shipping is another story...but something to think about...
...

And just so you know, you can't get your hd cable box/dvr to work with the hdmi hookups going in. Stupid HDCP blocks that, however with a receiver that outputs over hdmi, you can connect with component and still get a great picture than if you went directly into your tv.

Are you saying that this receiver isn't HDCP compliant, or that it is a problem in general?

This one looks to be the impeding destroyer of worlds coming this May. HDMI 1.3, internal DTHD/DTS-HDMA decoding, $499.

Probably a stupid question, but it says video up-conversion. Does that mean it upconverts sd-dvds?

I think it's a problem in general. I know my receiver is hdcp compliant. They just do that for piracy reasons, I'm sure. I'm not a pirate, but I get lumped in with the rest of them.

HDMI.

It lists for the same price, I think.

EDITED: WTF? This is the same avr you linked initially...it's got HDMI and your link goes to the KS not VK.

Holy poop. Any word or info about the 805?

I need to replace my aging Pioneer Elite vsx29tx: DTS decoding has failed, and it seems to be getting both quieter and hotter

I was seriously considering the Pioneer vsx82txs...but if the 805 is coming soon...with Select certification AND all of the 605's bells and whistles...and at the price of the current 804...again, holy poop.

It's freakin' amazing what you can get for $500. I wonder how this compares sound wise to high(ish) end equipment from 5 years ago or so?

WOW. Thanks...not sure this makes a decision any easier ("but for a few (hundred) dollars more...you get shiatzu massage as the receiver warms up!")...but thanks.

Looks like I'll hold out for a bit. Sorry, Pioneer!

Man that Onkyo receiver is looking AWESOME!!!

Never heard of the compnay before but you can pre-order this beauty for $399 at J&R.com Must be an american dealer. If it were a Cnd dealer and no worry about Duty charges and exchange rates. I would be all over this thing

Well I have an Onkyo Receiver from about 3 years ago and I hope it keeps working for a while longer since I am looking at upgrading speakers. But with these choices of receivers it makes it hard to wait. For the record the one I have now has never given me any problems.

Onkyo seems to be offering alot for the prices listed. My only experience with Onkyo is my 6 disc cd changer. It's gotta be close to 15 years old now, and that thing is a tank. It's a DX-C606. Still works great.

I'm still going to wait and see what Pioneer has to offer, but it appears Onkyo is putting out some serious stuff for the money as seen above.
