Blown Speaker?

Ok, so I just brought all my electronic equipment home for the summer and my dad wanted to watch Star Wars Episode 6. He's getting kind of older and has a hard time hearing dialog so he has to turn the sound way up. Now I left him alone with my system and he had it really really loud.

Whenever the spaceships would fly by i'd hear major distortion and it would just sound bad. He said the speakers wouldn't blow and could go way loud then what he had them at but i'm just not sure. I was visibly frustrated because I felt like my speakers were going before my very ears. Lets say he had the volume (which is normally set at 35-36) up to 44ish on a pretty loud movie. Would this cause damage to the speakers? They are practically brand new and I do not want to replace anything just yet.

After hearing all the loud explosions coming through the speakers I just kept getting more nervous and had to turn it down. After the movie was finished I needed to check and see if they were alright. I played The Eagles HD DVD and it sounded excellent. Even at louder levels nothing was popping or hissing or anything like that.

Since i'm assuming that The Eagles sounded great, my speakers aren't blown, but they did sound terrible with the explosions in star wars. Anyway to know if there is any damage to them or what I should do? Am I going to have to replace this speakers because of what happened?

Thanks,

Sam

A common misconception is that more wats than a speaker can handle, will low the speaker. More speakers are blown by less watts than a speaker can handle. What realy blows your speaker, is distortion. When you crank your system to the point all you hear is distortion.

So, to answer your question, you could have damaged your speakers. It is just a matter of what they sound like now.

Sorry to have to tell you that, but, hey...maybe it is time to upgrade

How will I know for sure if they are damaged? If I played The Eagles HD DVD and it sounded great, am I safe?

I would generaly sound garbled. If you blew your speaker, you would be able to tell it at a moderate level.

you would here distortion and and often a rumbling noise when close to the speaker. You sound okay.

Just look at the speakers if you aren't convinced they are ok after the Eagles disc.

Inspect the cones, on the outside edge.

Given your comments, I think they are fine.
