Toshi SD5000 opinions?

I need a cheap dvd player for my outdoor theater. This sucka has HDMI, upconverts to 1080i and it's only $70 at CC.

Toshiba SD5000 specs

I plan on hooking this or some other player up to a Panasonic PT-AX100U pj either via HDMI or Component. Audio will only be 3 front speakers, so I gotta get an el cheapo avr too. This is for my outdoor theater thus my biggest layout of cash is going towards the pj.

Comments?

Toshiba HD-A2 for $242 from Electronics Expo? (near the Willowbrook Mall next to CostCo) ,,,with 5 free HD DVDs no less. Print out their advertised price on Amazon and they will match it in the store.

I know you said cheapo, but why not spend an bit extra and get 5 free HD DVDs in the process. I mean do the math.

$242 - $100 (5 free HD DVDs) = $142

$142 - 70 = $72.

Isnt it worth $72 more to be able to play your current and future HD DVDs on your outdoor theater AND get the HD-A2's significantly better upscaling than the SD-5000 to boot?

CC has an HD-A2 deal I believe also, 5 free HD DVDs, $299 (they might drop to match Electronics Expo though), and another 2 free HD DVDs if you buy either Matrix Trilogy HD DVD boxset when you buy the player.

Ruined, I admire your effort....I do.

However, I've got some other expenditures coming up (11K landscaping job) and a trip to Pittsburgh so I gotta go cheap. As it is, the pj is going to be $1299 after rebate, I got speakers and a receiver to buy so it's a large outlay of cash....even for me...Bruce Wayne.

I saw go for it as well. The GREAT thing is, if it gets damaged (being outdoors and all) you're only out the ~$70, which isn't much.

Peace...

My friend got this player, Iggy and it's a real POS. He's had audio sync issues, read issues, disc errors, etc. He might have gotten a lemon, but I'd keep the receipt just in case.

I'll sell you my A1 once I get my XA2.

Did you buy one already?

What's the max you would spend on a player?

No...all I got ordered or bought thus far is the projector. I just ordered that moments ago.

I'm all for suggestions and am wondering if I should just drag my Elite DV-05 up there for the player and move my 360 + HDAO into it's old place in the living room setup. The only thing against doing that is the DV-05 doesn't have HDMI which should provide a slightly better pic given the sheer size of the image. Meh....

As you probably know, I’m not a fan of Oppo, but they might just do the trick for your needs. The 970 or 981 would probably look great with your new PJ. Just don’t watch anything with subtitles.
