Gamma settings...what do they do?

If you were able to change Gamma settings plus or minus, how would that effect the picture?

it darkens the greys/blacks of the image.

but if you go too high with the gamma correction, blacks will start too look gray and colors will appear washed out.

but I've downed 4 glasses of wine in the last half hour, so what do I know?

FYI: With Samsung DLPs, the internal service menu has gamma table adjustments, 0 is a correct 2.54 curve, usually default is set to 2 or 3 (out of 4), which crushes blacks and blows out whites:
