powered subwoofer gone crazy!!! any ideas?

Hello all,

I was wondering if you guys could point me towards a good online resource of if you have your own opinions. I have a 5 year old powered sub that was almost always left on (not smart, but why on earth can't they put an automatic turn on feature on these things?) Who wants to go behind the stereo system everytime you play music or watch a movie?

Anyway, one day the amount of bass produced was considerably lessened, (not like the subwoofer couldn't make the bass notes, more like it was no longer trying to pass bass notes. This happens about 15 percent of the time now. Changing my reciever from surround to stereo a few times would usually get it working again. (however I am sure the problem is not my reciever, because...)

Another thing that started happening was an audible hum from the subwoofer that it used to not make. (loud enought to ruin low volume listening. After that it started to sometimes have a thunderous hum that sounds like a band on stage having a bad accident during warm up. It's an electronic, deep feedback sounding hum coming out of the speaker. Usually when it gets very loud, all I have to do is turn it off and on again to get it back to the quiter hum or no hum at all.

Now as of today, there seems to be nothing I can do to get rid of the very loud hum. I opened the back of the sub and all electrical parts seem intact, other than the two wires that go to the speaker terminals seem to be rather loose where they are soldered onto some kind of circuit board near the amp.

This subwoofer is designed in a way that it is impossible for me to have made those solders lose. There is nothing on the outside for me to pull on to cause that. So I don't know if that could be the problem. I really doubt it is.

If I had a bad fuse, I guess it wouldn't even turn on?

So if you guys have any ideas, I'd like to know. At it's age, repair would cost more than finding a replacement, but I really like this sub so I am hoping to find some ideas.

Thanks in advance.

What kind of sub is it? Most subs I have seen have an auto turn on ( I leave mine off ) It sounds like the amp is giving out, sorry to say. If you have already ruled out the source, and it sounds like you have, it can only be the sub.

It is a KLH Bassbite V, of which I have seen many on Ebay as refurbed. Of course now that I would go that route, they are harder to find.
