5.1 from HTPC

OK, what the hell am I doing wrong?

I'm trying to hook up a pc to my home theatre and I wanted 5.1 sound. Now if I use the optical out from my sound card (x-fi platinum) it will only be 5.1 with DVD's and for anything else only stereo. It would seam that the only way to get 5.1 for normal computer use is to use the direct analog outputs from the card.

Does this sound right or am I missing something? Or do I just need a better card.
