Need a 37" TV should I bother with HDTV

My old 32" Sony trinitron is on the way out, so i am looking to replace it. I want to go with an HDTV. My wife thinks we should just get another CRT.

32" is as big as we can go (all the cabinet will hold), down the road in a few years i plan to build a place in the basement for a large screen TV, but for right now 32" is best i can do.

What are your thoughts...

My 32" CRT went out last year, and I went through the same situation. I decided to go for HDTV and went for a 42" plasma, which I'm very happy with. A 42" plasma is actually just about 1" taller vertically to a 32" CRT image, as most of the added screen size is the wider aspect ratio of the 16:9 screen.

If you get a 32" HDTV with a 16:9 screen, it might be shorter than your current CRT image.

I guess it depends on how much HD stuff you plan to watch that should dictate your decision, in addition to how much you want to spend. If you watch a lot of broadcast or cable TV, HDTV is worth getting. If you just watch regular DVDs, maybe you should stick to a CRT, although the 16:9 screen allows you to remove the black bars on 1.85:1 movies and reduce them on 2.35:1 movies. Doesn't seem like you're considering Blu-Ray or HD-DVD since you're looking at only a 32" size.

Fitting it into an existing cabinet does somewhat dictate what you will get. You just may not see the benefits of HDTV as much on a 32" screen.

Thank you for the response. I am limited on the width with the cabniet i have.

If i go HDTV then over the air HD is what i will watch mostly with DVD's being a close second.

Maybe HD on cable?

There are a few manufacturers of 30" widescreen CRT's or there were a few years ago. You might want to take a look at one of these. I checked a couple and it seems like they are about 35" wife. How much room do you have. Can't be too much if you have a 32' in your cabinet. i assume thats about 30" wide?

it looks like i can fit a 37" into the same spot my old 32 CRT was. So what are your thoughts on 720p vs 1080i or even 1080p.

Something so small (37in), 720p would probably be fine.
