Upconverting players: Toshi vs. Oppo vs. Price

Ok, I know the Toshi HD players excel at upcon, and I know the Oppo's do as well. My neighbor needs a new CHEAP SD player that upcons well.

Can you list the cheapest Toshi and Oppo players in order of video quality so I can suggest the right one for my neighbor?

He will use HDMI or Component.

Thanks!

Never mind. I just ordered the HD-A3 for 97 bucks shipped.

(I'm so impatient sometimes)

You did the right thing. While the Oppo may do various tasks technically better, the output of Toshibas is far more satisfying. Colors looked downright washed out from the Oppo compared to the HDA1.

Actually this is most likely because the A1 incorrectly displays DVDs in HD colorspace instead of SD colorspace.

"Crazy good reviews" For $400 I'd have never sold my neighbor on it but for us, this does look like the player to beat at the moment.

Unless I'm missing something, that review didn't talk about the quality of the upconversion. It only mentioned that it did it. Since it's Oppo it probably means it's going to do it well, but I for one would be interested in a comparison to other lauded upconverters like the XA2.

That's a good point. I kinda assumed they meant it was great at upconversion based on their admiration of that ABT-102 chip.

The upconversion ability of the DV-983H with ABT will be comparable to HQV Reon, as featured in the Toshiba XA2, Samsung BDP-1200, & 875/905 receivers.

I don't know if the Secrets guys analyze HD video output quality yet. I know with the HD DVD and upconverting players they've tested, they've focused on the 480p output from the player.

Peace...

Does anyone know if Toshiba's new Blu-killing upcon players will be universal? I'm in need of a new DVD player, and I'm thinking about that new Oppo. But, if Tosh's upcon is going to be as good as they claim, I may wait. I would like to be able to play all my other region/PAL stuff, though.

I really doubt it.
