I don't think there is a set rule of thumb for depreciation. I think it has to do with the desirability of the unit in question. For instance, the XA2 is still commanding a rather high price. 9" CRT projectors are still in the high thousands of dollars. McIntosh gear almost always has a high resale value ( one reason I am considering investing

I don't have much experience in purchasing used a/v gear, but I imagine a lot has to do with brand, model and type of equipment. Something like a power amp, for example, is going to hold a higher value longer than a processor that will be outdated by the next generation. Speakers seem to hold value fairly well too, since they really never become outdated. That's not to say they hold a high percentage of their original retail value though, since I picked up a pair of Boston HD-8 bookshelves for $75, and I believe they were closer to $250 new.
BTW, I picked up my Yamaha RX-V1300 for ~$600, discounted from $799, simply because the 1400 was out.

New in a box of old tech drops in price like a rock. Look at what happened to HD DVD. I bought my last two players for $100 and less ( A30 for $100, A35 for $80 ) and price matched my first HD A35 to $150. SO, I got three 1080P HD DVD players for less than the price of the HD-A35 three months ago.
