Set top box for front projector?

Hi All,

I’m looking for a DTV set top box that offers the following features:

1. Receives over-the-air DTV UHF transmissions
2. Decodes the MPEG-2 video
3. Provides an audio digital bitstream output for an external AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) decoder
4. Outputs 720p60 and 1080i30 without conversion
5. Provides the RGBHV signals required by a data-grade or graphics-grade front projector
6. Ideally, offers at least one external RGBHV input and internal switch to facilitate selecting an alternate RGBHV source like a line doubler

A current market survey indicates that the closest commercially available products are the Sony (which has RGBHV outputs but converts 720p60 to 1080i30 - unacceptable) and the Panasonic (which outputs transmitted formats without conversion but only has component outputs, requiring an Extron Component-to-RGBHV converter - also not acceptable). Neither has an RGBHV switch to accommodate another RGBHV source (which requires an Extron RGBHV switch - an unacceptable expense). I’m at a loss to understand why no manufacturer has directed an HDTV set top box at the HDTV compatible data-grade and graphics-grade projector market.

Does anyone offer such a product? And does anyone know if the current controversy concerning the DTV RF transmission mode is serious enough to postpone purchasing such a product until that issue is resolved?

Dan

Dan,

I don't know of any commercial STBs that have the specifications that you mention, but there should be several PC HD decoder solutions that should do all of your tasks released in the next 6 months. Hauppage, and Ati have announced products, and TeVCA recently announced a HD PC card that will even display 1080p (with a compliant display), for just under $1000.
