Peter Jackson's The Frighteners- Director's Cut

Big fan of Peter Jackson, always have been. However, I hadn't seen the director's cut of The Frightener's until very recently. Holy Nuts, never have I seen 12 minutes make such a difference. However, I saw a duped tape (from the LD), and the picture and sound were not great.

My wishes are this (and I think everyone's who's seen the Dr. Cut but don't own a laserdisc player are the same)- we need it on DVD. Bad. I don't care if Universal just directly ports the Laser transfer to DVD, as long as I can get those 12 minutes with decent picture and sound. The Laser has an audio commentary by Jackson and a 4.5 hour documentary for craps sake. Now that LOTR is kicking ass all over the world, there is a chance The Frighteners will get the special edition treatment, BUT WE NEED TO LET UNIVERSAL KNOW WE WANT IT BAD!

Any thoughts on this issue, the movie in general, or affirmations of desire for the Director's Cut on DVD are very welcome.

Worry not, Smurdleman!
There ARE plans for a DVD release of the S.E. which was released on Laserdisc with the documentary and deleted scenes plus more.
I too, being a HUGE Peter Jackson fan, have been awaiting this release. THE FRIGHTENERS is a VERY underrated film, and I can't wait to see the making of doc.
There isn't a set date, but it's in the works. Just be patient (i know...it's hard, isn't it?.

This is one of my favorites too! This movie, along with Dead Alive and Heavenly Creatures have made me a Pete Jackson fan for life!

Never seen the director's cut, so if this SE does become a reality it gives me A LOT to look forward too!

Deffinatly an under-estimated film. I think the problem was they didn't know which category to put it into. Was it a comedy, was it a horror movie? It was of course both those things while still being a great movie. Michael J. was great in this movie but I of course loved the performance of Jeffrey Combs. He is by far my FAVORITE creepy-charactor actor. From Re-Animator, to From Beyond, to Deep Space Nine this guy is by far the best creepy-actor in the business.

And now I just read there will be a new Re-Animator movie. YIPPEEEEE!!!!!

I think another problem was that it came out duing a VERY crowded summer. If memory serves, this came out the same summer as Twister, Independence Day, Mission: Impossible, & Eraser, among others. Something had to suffer, and a hard-to-define supernatural comedy-thriller made by an obscure director starring an actor who hadn't had a hit in quite some time (and even that was the oft-bashed Back to the Future III), and you had a recipe for failure. I believe that, had it been pushed back to the fall (or rereleased), & capitalized on being a genuinely creepy ghost story for Halloween, it would have done far better. But Universal wasn't known for making many good decisions at that time, which means that, for people that never saw that, it has the stigma of failure all over it.

I was actually talking about this movie over the Holiday, and ws thinking about buying the bare-bones disc. Now I will wait.

I'm almost temped to want Criterion to pick up Frighteners. They'd do a two-thumbs up job on it to be sure, but with the success of LOTR, I"m betting the studios, Universal included, will be holding onto their Jackson films like theres no tomorrow. With Criterion we'd have more of a chance of getting the WHOLE 4.5 hour documentary instead of an edited version of it, ala Jaws. Here's hoping for an Ultimate Edition from Universal. Put it in a double pack with the Legend Ultimate Edition (whenever that comes out ) and we'd be all set

The Frighteners is one of the few Videos that I regularly watch these days. Please Universal, give us the Collectors Edition dvd with the directors cut.Maybe if Peter Jackson scoops an Oscar or two for FOTR then maybe Universal might want to cash in?!
