Are there any other W.C. Fields dvd's available?
Are there any other W.C. Fields dvd's available?.
I actually bought the Madacy entertainment 2 dvd box, without prior knowledge of the quality. Those two dvd's were the epitome of garbage-I hope another company will release these marvellous shorts-re-mastered. Here's hoping. Ps Can someone please release the Cat and the Canary and the Ghost Breakers on Dvd. My vhs versions are worn out. Regards Linval

Re: The Great Man on DVD
The Fields criterions are must-haves.
Look for BIG BROADCAST OF 1938 coming to DVD next spring as part of the Bob Hope collection, although Fields is actually the "star" of the film. Several other Hope features will also be available; I don't think GHOST BREAKERS is one of 'em, but CAT & THE CANARY may be. The excellent silent version is also available on DVD. There's also at least one Fields silent feature available on DVD, I believe; SALLY OF THE SAWDUST or RUNNING WILD (I forget which). Clearly, more Fields are called for! |

Re: Laurel & Hardy
Artisan now advises me that they have no plans to issue Laurel & Hardy films in the U.S. at present, despite the fact that 2002 marks Stan & Ollie's 75th anniversary as a team.
Somebody at Artisan (a division of Hallmark) is dumb as dogshit. |

Re: Stan & Ollie
Absolutely, but sadly few of their good films are in the public domain (UTOPIA, anyone? Ecch!).
A remastered, uncolorized MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS will be out on DVD this year, but that's all I've heard of. Oh, and the Bob Hope releases include THE GHOST BREAKERS but not CAT AND THE CANARY. Hey, Columbia, when's the next volume of Three Stooges shorts coming out??? |

I would buy the L&H stuff in a minute if they'd release it, but I've never understood the appeal of the Three Stooges. Next to other early comics, they seem crude and brutal, with none of the elegance of Chaplin, inventiveness of Keaton, razor-sharp wit of the Marx Brothers, or style of L&H. They remind me more of the early Sennett films, which IMO are only interesting if you're a Chaplin historian. Seeing someone hit repeatedly isn't funny, to me anyway.
Someone on a film newsgroup theorized that most adults who find the Stooges funny probably watched them as a kid, and I admit that I didn't. Were you Stooges fans introduced to them while young, or did you come to them as an adult?

Re: Stooges
I'm not a Stooges fan, but once in awhile they're good for a laugh or two, especially Shemp and Larry. HOWEVER... Li'l Gravy is nine, just the right age to appreciate slapstick, and he likes 'em, so we watch 'em together. Yeah, I watched 'em as a kid and liked 'em, although I never put 'em anywhere near Laurel & Hardy, the Marxes, or W.C. Fields.
In the mid-1980s, I bought the complete VHS set of Laurel & Hardy sound shorts available from the Nostalgia Merchant, 36 shorts on 9 volumes, and they are without a doubt the most watched and most requested videos I've owned (and I own thousands). The Little Rascals, all 81 Hal Roach-produced sound shorts (plus a few silents), beautifully remastered and restored, are also very popular. There's 21 volumes, the first 12 of which are available on six DVDs. I have just been advised that the 11-disc Buster Keaton DVD set is going for a little over $100 from deepdiscount, so I'm ordering that today. Happy new year! |

I also got the Chaplin box (Gold Rush, Modern Times, City Lights and Great Dictator), the Chaplin First National shorts, and the Kid/A Dog's Life DVD for Christmas. If nothing else, I'll start the new year in a good mood.
